Dinah -
I go to Chicago for business + family fun at least twice a year. I always find the cheapest hotel rates at www.quickbook.com

I like to stay near Michigan Avenue. From Michigan Avenue you can walk to lots of places ... some farther than others. Or it's an inexpensive taxi ride since it's centrally located to the places the planning committee are talking about.

I am hoping I can come.

So that's one for dinner Friday night and for any activities Saturday daytime.

Same here. I'd like to push back Sat evening to Sun morning, but hubby has already been awfully nice...

That'd be wonderful. I'd be pleased to meet you! (nm) » annierose

Does that mean you're coming? Cooool.

I am really really serious about hating my pictures. I guess I can't help you all seeing my body-container. I like to think I look nothing at all like that, though.

I'll be the big fat person in pink and yellow.

OMG Dinah you are so mean to yourself!

It was a general suggestion about piks because I am imaging what it would feel like to meet up with a bunch of people you dont know, but you kind of do know, so do we know each other or not?? LOL

As for going Id really like to, but what do I tell people? im trying to fit it in to my schedule. Im still iffy. how private and confidential will this be? Not that I would ever worry about that LOL

I'm not sure about the private and confidential. What in particular are you worried about? Believe me, I understand that concern. My husband is absolutely paranoid. He's positive Babble is filled with axe murderers.

I'm planning to go as "Dinah", if that's what you mean. When the party looked to be bigger, Dr. Bob spoke of hiring security.

My husband and therapist know where I'm going. As far as everyone else is concerned, I'm going on a trip with some friends. No lie there. If they're internet savvy enough, I might say to meet some friends I met on the internet. I'd never say that to my Mom.

I wasn't fishing. :)

It's a genuine concern. In fact, it was the first thing out of my therapist's mouth when I told him. He asked me if I realized what a big chance I was taking. That people had a certain image of me (and vice versa of course) from my posts, and a physical persona might not match.

He wasn't discouraging my going. In fact, he likes the idea. He just wanted to make sure I had thought of the worst case scenarios (as if I weren't a hundred times better at that than he is).

Well Im worried about axe murderers too :-) seriously haha

But the final decisions should probably be emailed to the people who are going, having it up here leaves it open to axe murders and well, alot of people. Like how about not having it in Chicago ;-) hehe

I would tell people my first name, well I may chicken on that but I dont think i could go by rain it isnt me, Im oddly not a rain. I look like my name...what a coincidence :-)

I am thinking on a story. What else is going on in Chicago that weekend? Any shopping events? Ill hopefully come up with something.

From what I hear, shopping is always a valid excuse if you live near enough.

Someone at one point suggested that the final arrangements be sent to just those who confirm they are going. Or nametags be sent from Dr. Bob just to those who confirm they are going. But that was also back when the party looked to be bigger.

How about it, Dr. Bob? What security measures do you think would be wise?

So I can reassure my husband, the axe-murderer phobic.

Right, I think more info might help people decide if they want to come or not...

I think it would depend on what we're doing and where we'll be. I don't know, alerting the staff? Hiring a security guard?

I was thinking that specifics about the weekend would not be posted here but emailed to attendees only to prevent security concerns?

How about a mailing list for confirmed attendees to finalize the details of where and when to meet?

If we are meeting at a public place, such as a restaurant, I would feel pretty safe. I spoke with my husband last night, and I am fairly sure I can come.

Excellent! So far all the proposed activities have been at public places - parks and restaurants. So glad you are coming.

I'm not sure there's any way to prevent security concerns. Who would be considered "confirmed"?

A mailing list at Yahoo? One that's by invitation only?

Several people have mentioned that option. Maybe it would be a good idea, Dr. Bob.

But I do think you should announce the dates, and a general plan. Something along the lines of dinner Fri night, Saturday activities, and Sunday activities if anyone is interested.

It's kind of a catch 22. If you don't announce the date, no one knows how many people may or may not come, and it's harder to plan. Right now we seem to be talking about such a small group that it's not a big deal. But if we make plans based on a small group...

Besides, planes, hotels, finances. Those things need to be done a week or two in advance. :)

Sorry, what option?

I think a general plan is fine. But what activities? Or just "activities"?

"A mailing list at Yahoo? One that's by invitation only?"

If that's all we got, then yes "activities". :)

Sorry I can't be more help there, but a)I'm not on the planning committee and Dr. Bob probably thinks I've already overstepped my bounds and b) I know no more about the area than I saw when googling.

How about someone present a proposed general (for security sake) itinerary (maybe even you Dr. Bob) just to get the ball rolling. I'm sure there will be more than enough countersuggestions and objections (especially if it's you, Dr. Bob) to eventually end up where we wish to be.

I got some insider tips, but I think I will wait till I post them...untill this gets more organized.
And I know I am totaly budding in here, especially since Im not for sure coming.

How about finding out what kind of food people like and then narrow down restaurants from there for Friday night. Isnt that the plan? Dinner?
Maybe Dr Bob would have some suggestions??

As for the next day my understanding is that it is not a dull city and that there are many attractions that could keep a group occupied for awhile. When I get more organized on my end I will post what I know.
