What about burgers (including veggie burgers) and dogs at an outdoor site. Maybe a picnic?

May I suggest the Lincoln Park area if anyone is interested in drinks and/or dining in the evening?

I've seen many different suggestions, but is there a clear consensus on what everyone would like to do?

I think a park is a great place to gather together and have a picnic. I guess I was thinking of quirky Chicago weather (having been surprised a couple of times there) and having a place where we can officially loiter.

There are some great spots on Lake Michigan, if you can wait until the weather gets less quirky. (May?) I live too far away so I can't come, but I did go to school there so I know the lay of the land a bit.

Hmmm a consensus on Babble. What a novel idea! I think a picnic at a park sounds good. Babble's birthday is June 10th, so the 11th (Saturday) would be the date?

Um, yeah, if we can ever figure out which way is forward! So far I think we are having a picnic at a park in Chicago around the 10th of June for Babble's birthday.

Can I suggest if you decide to have it outside, that you not disclose the exact location publically? Perhaps only disclose it to those who have paid via some method which ID's them to Dr. Bob? Sorry to be the house worrier.

99.9% of the people I've met online are great....but just to be on the safe side, I think it would be best if it was kept confidential.

Additionally, who wants a photo taken of the group taken and posted on the web somewhere? Bob HAS kinda ticked off a few people over the years (sorry Bob....I'm sure you have more fans than foes).

Since I'm not attending, I shouldn't have a voice....but I will be the official party worrier.

Ooh oooh, good worrying, TE! I never thought about that. Yucko, imagine our event being invaded by trolls!

And did we talk about a group picture? Yikes, so much for privacy. Maybe we could all hold Dr. Bob pictures in front of our faces?

Still in favor of the gathering, but feeling a bit nervous about privacy.

We could also just hire a private security person?

A picnic sounds lovely. I do a mean BBQ brisket (Texas style) and pretty decent potato salad.

Dr. Bob - I was on the planning committee and would love to help however I can, but I'm going through a rough bit right now and I'm not sure how much I can contribute.

Another thing about a picnic, would people from out of town bring food?

Don't worry about it, it's good just to see a post from you, please take care of yourself.

Out of towners could bring take out from a restaurant or stop at a deli... Chicago has some great food - that's worth a trip in itself for me!

Do any of the outdoor facilities have cooking facilities?

I haven't been to Chicago, but there's also bound to be a Polish restaraunt or two. I haven't had a decent bowl of Zurek in a long time.

I know someone named Zurek! :-)

Is your friend as delicious as the soup?

ok, semi-serious

You know someone with the same name as a soup? How interesting!

I've got to know. Is the person of Polish ancestry? If so, that would make the name much more interesting - being Polish *and* named the same as a Polish soup.

But it could be with one of the other Zs. There are three in Polish. The one used for the soup is the one with the dot over it, if memory serves me.

I am going to book my flights so I get a low fare(the date is closer than we think). I plan to arrive on Friday June 10 and depart on Sunday the 12th.
I guess if this party falls through I'm taking a mini vacation to Chicago, but that's OK too!

So do I, Dr. Bob. But if I had to guess, it's not the same Zurek. I don't know that we hang in the same circles ;).

So a park on June 10th? Is weather in Chicago stable enough to count on that or should there be an alternate venue? Are there any parks with facilities you can rent? There are around here. That way if the skies open, you can run indoors.

I have a suggestion. If there are going to be overhead expenses that require that we buy tickets in advance, so to speak, we'd perhaps get a better idea of how many are coming. And maybe those tickets could come with a code that only appears in the email that Dr. Bob sends to the email address associated with Babble and the specific Babbler. Then a preprinted Babble party tag can be issued to that Babbler upon their giving their code. I hate to be suspicious or anything, but I'd hate for another "Dinah" to show up there. And we don't even really know what each other looks like or sounds like in most cases.

Should we have some sort of deadline for sending in requests to attend? It's kind of hard to plan with no idea of how many are coming.

I'm in, unless it means a divorce.

But it would be nice to know if I was coming for an intimate tete a tete a tete with Partlycloudy and Dr. Bob or a big old fashioned party.

I wouldn't count on it not raining...

Yes, of course. From PC's post I gathered the eleventh?

Well, since you wouldn't count on the weather, a head count - sooner rather than later - is probably a wise idea. It'd be nice to know if we could move it to the local McDonald's or if a larger venue would be in order.

You've had experience with this before, Dr. Bob. My take on your prior experiences was that very few people actually take you up on your invitations? I hope it's different this time.
