I'd best refrain from comment on that story. Too many straight lines that could spark a snarky refrain. :) But both you and Susan47 HAVE been punished by Dr. Bob for not covering your "@ss". The ability to resist using the word "@ss" is all that separates us from the lower animals. With chimps, it's just "@ss this" and "@ss that." Next thing you know, they're hurling their own feces at innocent zoo-goers. "@ss" is clearly a "gateway" to more serious lapses in civility. Or something. ;) Atticus

Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but this bothers me a bit. I don't know if I would say it is uncivil, but at the very least it doesn't feel supportive, IMO. Now, I suppose we can all assume Dr. Bob is not here for support, but how do we ever really know why any poster is here and aren't we are expected to be supportive of everyone? If this was written about any other poster, would it have been acceptable? (Maybe Dr. Bob could answer that?)
Dr. Bob seems to be somewhat forgiving of attacks on him and to some degree, I suppose he has to be since this board is, in part, for challenging his decisions. To me, though, this feels more personal than "admin".
Jai, I love to read your posts and I hope I have not offended you. Maybe I just have a stick up my @ss.

I thought it portrayed him as sweet and curious - there was an undertone of warning about the dangerously addictive nature of computing... but I didn't take it to be cruel at all.
I do agree, however, that it would be inappropriate to speculate about the childhood of the average poster here (unless you were sure they could appreciate your intentions) - but Dr. Bob is nearer the healthy end of the spectrum so I am sure he can handle it!

My point is just that I don't know and I'm guessing, unless a poster has a personal relationship with Dr. Bob, that none of us know. Just as we don't know the level of mental illness, if there is any, of any given poster unless they have told us, which I don't believe Dr. Bob has (correct me if I'm wrong, though).
That said, I believe all posts should remain civil no matter who the post is directed to or about.
Kind of a moot point, though, since we don't agree on the civility of the original post. Sometimes I just like to hear myself think, I guess :).

It didn't come across to me as cruel at all,
I thought it was a whimsical story like Ferdinand the Bull who was always off sniffing the flowers.
I know Jai's always made a point of saying really nice things about Dr. Bob on admin too unlike say.. me, so perhaps that made me see it differently too.

I don't think we interpreted the entire text differently. I specifically took one passage from the whole which I saw as dark humor, yes, at other times I find the same selection poignant, the rest of the piece I spoke with Jai about in an e-mail, and I mentioned that when I'm my most upset my humor still finds it way out.
It's impossible for me to see how the whole work could be seen as funny, it was simply the passage I chose to focus on.

I suppose if it was offensive that I pointed out that I found the lines about inhaling a missing cat darkly humorous in an otherwise serious and painful piece, I apologize. I won't apologize for finding it funny though, life is painful and funny simultaneously, it just didn't occur to me that prose shouldn't be.
