I'd just like to plug the double double quotes feature:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#amazon

But I don't mean to be pushy. Did you deliberately not use it to link to Amazon? If so, I'd be interested in why, over at Psycho-Babble Administration:

Thanks!

Bob

Sorry Bob,
I'd seen reference to the double quotes feature, but never paid any attention to it.
I'm just a newbie here.

Dr. Bob,
I was [not aware] of how that feature was to be written. In the future, if I mention a book, I will use the double quote feature.

No, my thoughts aren't nearly organized enough to purposely not use double quotes. I think it is my laziness gene. I'd never double-quoted anything before, wasn't exactly sure how it worked, and wasn't sure I had the title exactly right, and, I'm not sure I even thought of it at the time.

So, it was probably a combination of the laziness gene and the memory-loss gene (which switches randomly between long-term loss and short-term loss).

Now that I've done it (I did an experiment on PSB, and tho I was the principle investigator, I did not receive funding) I'm much more likely to do it again.

Be pushy, Doc Bob!

I had no idea and now I do. Thank you! It's a very good idea--and so is one's local library--that is if they carry the book : )

Book post response

Posted by dave1 on March 4, 2003, at 9:01:03

Hi Dr. Bob,

I posted the name of a book in single quotes on psycho-babble and you questioned why I didn't use double quotes or link it to amazon.com.

What happened was that I gave out information from the book about bz dosage, then the person asked where I got the info. I told them the name of the book, but having no idea how good or accurate the book was I certainly didn't want to plug it or push it. There may be much better books out there. I really haven't researched it. I just picked up the book on a whim, although I think it was at the JHU medical school book store which I guess would probably mean it is good.

Regarding the technicalities of using double quotes and linking books to amazon.com, I really wasn't aware of these policies/features to be honest with you.

Bye,

Dave

Amazon has totally changed the book selling
market and run several of my fav. bookstores
out of business.

That is why I will not use this option on this
web-site.

Dr. Bob,
I went there and for some reason could not figure out how it worked ! For all my knowledge...I guess understanding how that worked, escaped me. I will try to figure it out better if the need arises.
Thanks for handling the site. It is helplful.

Kristen:

It is not a law that you have to link the book posts. Feel free to recommend books without using the double-quote feature. Dr. Bob forgot to mention that it's more important to support others with your terrific suggestions than it is to support Amazon.com.

Hi Kristen,

I had trouble figuring out the double quote thingy the first time I used it too. I put the double quotes in the text but what I missed, initially, was that I must also click the "submit your links" button located at the bottom of the final page where I confirm the post.

That should only be necessary if you've changed the default choice (which is the first one). If the first one is right, you should be able just to click on "confirm your post"...

I really thought I did the double quote thing right, but didn't ... sorry. I kinda need to thing of it a QUAD quotes with my literal brain. Will remember in the future.
P.S. I do realize that a single set of quotation marks isn't really used - little humor there !!

I know you were joking but it started me wondering whether everyone used the expression double quotes now, or if it was primarily a computer term. Programmers of course discovered early that many programs were too dumb to know the difference between quotation marks and the apostrophe (non double quote) and that the apostrophe could be typed more easily (no shift key). Is double double quotes as meaningful a sentence to everyone as it is to me?

>>Is double double quotes as meaningful a sentence to everyone as it is to me?>>>

Actually, yes it is. The problem I had was, I did it correctly - as it came up as link. The link was to the same title book but not to the one I was referring. I don't know why the concept is so difficult ??? The problem is if you try to talk about a book, it's preformance anxiety to try to manage to handle it correctly. I shall not be dismayed ... I guess !!!!

Yep :-) makes sense to me I now understand it LOL (nm) » jane d

That's the right ide, but was that in fact the book you meant? There aren't any exact matches...
