unusual? SSRI relieves anxiety immediately in me

Posted by TriedEveryMedication on June 16, 2016, at 17:58:34

I have a lot of anxiety, both general and social.

When I take an SSRI, particularly paxil or prozac after not being on any meds for a while, I feel almost immediate relief of anxiety and I feel and act a lot calmer.

given how these are supposed to work I think this is unusual.

Also, if I take it more than a few days, I start getting spaced out and lethargic, so unfortunately this is not a long-term solution for me.

That's an excellent description of how ssri's work for me, too.

Would it be viable then to take an SSRI say once a week or so? (not talking about prozac weekly w/ the long half-life)

Has anyone tried this? I'd love to get the anti-anxiety effects without the stupor that comes after a couple weeks of use.

What it means to me is that you actually do have low serotonin. I believe most people do not, but given SSRIs anyway.

If your serotonin is low, an SSRI is going to increase it at the synapse rapidly - minutes or hours - and you feel that. Most people don't feel that. They instead wait 6 weeks for a numb feeling to kick in. They never felt a sudden profound relief on a single dose. You increased your serotonin and felt better. That tells me you actually could have low serotonin, for whatever reason.

But it becomes too much serotonin, flooding NE and DA receptors with all the overflow, within a few days. Went from too low to too high.

Maybe consider prozac doses spaced out every few days or so. A single dose can last a week with its long half life.

Maybe consider 5htp to create your own extra serotonin without any meds.

Consider rhodiola, which helps in the manufacture and utilization of serotonin, excellent anyway for anxiety and mood and energy.
