Reading Rx directions correctly helps...

Posted by B2chica on April 3, 2016, at 15:59:29

sigh... so i went to fill up my weekly pill container yesterday and noticed something about my amitriptyline instructions. To be honest, i must have REALLY been out of it as the first few days i was taking it from the bottle and hadn't put it in my pill container yet and Never read it to say this. anyway, i have been taking (1) 25mg pill every evening. However, on the bottle it actually says "Take 1 to 2 tablets by mouth at bedtime"

so i've heard of this with sleep or anxiety meds, but i'm not quite sure i understand it with an AD? why 1-2
i don't know when i'll see pdoc next and i dont know that the pharmacist can explain...

So i'm wondering if i should just start taking 2 tabs since 50mg is the min dosage for this med anyway?
**is it too soon to go up? i've been on this only since march 21st.

*my guess as to why he wrote it this way is so that i can start slow, but if one wasnt enough or if 50mg was too much...but had i read the instructions within that first week even i could have asked pdoc as i spoke on the phone with him twice.

anyway, any input appreciated.

Hi b2,

sounds like you don't want to contact your pdoc again, but that's exactly what I would do. If you cant get answers there, call the pharmacist as you said. And remember to tell both what other meds you are taking.

I recently got a script for Nardil and my pdoc gave me a list of food restrictions. When I got home I realized he never said a word about restricted meds.

We as patients must research everything I'm afraid.

Good luck,

Jade

my best wild *ss guess is that its 1-2 to start with because elavil can be heavily sedating, so better to allow some leeway in dosing than hit you w/ too much, too earlier, or get stuck on an ineffective dosage.

That's all I can come up with.

thanks,
since my mood is back low again today i've decided to take two tonight and see how that goes. if i have no ill effects than i will continue with 2 (the 50mg) until i talk with him again.
but i realized while looking through things again today i'm almost out of three of my meds so i need to call his office tomorrow anyway. maybe i'll just leave the note that i'm moving up to 2 a night.
thnx

It means its at your discresion where you take 1 or 2. Doc probably didn't know how the med would effect you and said 1-2.
