Withdrawing off ADs vs withdrawing of Stimulants?

Posted by Meltingpot on February 4, 2015, at 11:33:59

Hi,

My Doctor has prescribed me a stimulant (Elvanse) also known as vyanse, to add to my seroxat but I'm really leary of taking a stimulant.

It's one thing to be reliant on an antidepressants, I can't get off it without going through hell and I'm not sure about adding yet another drug that can have withdrawal affects when coming off it.

It probably seems odd that I haven't even started it yet and I'm worried about coming off it but the hell I experience coming off SSRIs makes me very wary. How does coming off a stimulant compare with coming off an antidepressant? Does anyone know? If you are taking an antidepressant whilst coming off a stimulant does it help?

I'd really appreciate hearing anyone elses experiences.

Denise

I think its easier to taper an amphetamine than a long term AD, personally.

It probably depends on the person, but I find coming off stimulants easier than antidepressants. Antidepressants seem to rewire my brain, whereas stims do just that...stimulate.

Thanks to both of you - I feel reassured now.

Hi,

Thanks to both of you, I was hoping that somebody would say that. I feel a bit better about taking the stimulants now :-)

I agree whole-heartedly, especially with a smoother, gradual drug like vyvance that doesn't give you that dopamine burst. Sometimes I feel terrible before taking my ritalin during the day after taking it a few days in a row, but it goes away after a day or two (IMHO)
