low does lithium orotate with Maois?

Posted by pontormo on September 15, 2014, at 13:38:24

Anyone know whether this is a safe combination? I've been reading some pretty authoritative articles about mood and health-related improvements in areas where the water supply has somewhat greater amounts of naturally-occurring lithium and was considering taking a small dose of supplement.

By the way, Phillips, this is supposedly also protective against alzheimer's which I know you're concerned about (as aren't we all?)--

thanks in advance!

I think this would probably be fine.

The dose is (probably) too low to induce any kind of serotonin syndrome.

You may be able to spit a cap (or dissolve in water and drink slowly) to be sure.

thanks Linkadge. I'm pretty susceptible to serotonin, so I'll proceed with caution, but I'm definitely going to try it.

Because my post read:

"I've been reading some pretty authoritative articles about mood and health-related improvements in areas where the water supply has somewhat greater amounts of naturally-occurring lithium and was considering taking a small dose of supplement."

Translation:

There is evidence that low amounts of lithium in drinking water tend to promote general health, in the population of the area, as well as to be protective against suicide risk and against alzheimer's and other forms of dementia.

That's the only part that I thought you would be interested in since I thought you had expressed concern about alzheimer's.

Thanks so what is your suggestion for me. Seriously as all older folks need to be concerned about this. Phillipa

You might want to look into/ask your physician about taking an over-the-counter version of lithium, which is available online.

The type of lithium used for biopolar is a much stronger molecule, lithium carbonate. The type of lithium available online, lithium orotate, delivers a much smaller dose.

I'm just not sure if it's a good idea to take it-- but on the other hand, it was mentioned in an article in the NY Times, by a reputable psychiatrist at Cornell Weill in NYC, so I'm thinking it must not be a dangerous thing.

This is a link to the article:

See what you think--

Let me know if

This is exactly what i am saying. I take 20mg elemental lithium from lithium orotate.

It is safe!

And it suppresses bad emotions and thoughts like suicide thoughts nicely. I don't know where i would be without it.

It wouldn't be pretty.

Serotonin syndrome is an unlikely outcome when combining lithium with an MAOI. In fact, before the days of SSRIs, lithium was routinely added to MAOIs, particularly Parnate (tranylcypromine).

I am currently taking Parnate 100 mg/day and lithium 450 mg/day.

Why did you choose lithium oratate to work with?

I was thinking of it mainly as a low-dose thing-- it seems the safest non-carbonate alternative.

I remembered that at one point, my pdoc had tried lithium-- which then answered my question-- but it was carbonate and I don't think, although I'm not sure, that it didn't agree with me. But then I also was highly suspicious of all drugs at that time.

Thanks for the information, though, Scott.

Very interesting, Lamdage-- that was what I was reading about-- that it can really elevate mood, and is associated with a lower suicide rate, as well as improving mortality, and even possibly protecting to some extent against dementia. So it definitely seems like something worth investigating.

I'm glad it helps you so much.

And i dont think lithium effects poop out ever.
Or so it feels.

Does anyone have info on that?
