Lamotrigine: What's the lowest dose?

Posted by former poster on February 8, 2014, at 11:12:20

My Pdoc gave me a prescription for Lamotrigine 25 mg to be taken at bedtime to improve sleep. I think I recall a Babbler that took even less. I can't remember their name. Can any benefits in function/mood occur at this low dose?

Former poster,

I once took 12.5 mg of lamotrigine because both times I tried taking 25 mg, I noticed an unacceptable increase in the severity of my fatigue. For the most part, I don't recall feeling much different on 12.5 mg of lamotrigine than how I feel without the medication, although I seemed to develop non-24-hour sleep/wake problems when I was on 12.5 mg of lamotrigine.

All in all, lamotrigine didn't seem to be a good medication for me. That doesn't necessarily mean that the medication won't be good for you or for someone else, though. I wish you luck with the lamotrigine, if you end up trying it.

No. 100 mgs is the bare minmum for therapeutic effect.

For sleep? There are way better things out there, like Gabitril, Rozerem and Clonidine.

Clonidine sounds intriguing. Yet I'm leary of the parasthesia side effect. Tried Gabitril years ago. Great for anxiety. What dose would work for sleep?

Most of the insomnia studies on Gabitril start at 8-12 mg.
