Parnate stimulation/agitation

Posted by diego on January 16, 2009, at 17:39:29

I was on Parnate 30 mg/day for years and stopped in 2002.

Was fine until a few months ago when the pit opened up and well, you know the story...

So I've started Parnate again and 10 mg/day whacks me out with anxiety, restlessness and agaitation for 6-8 hours after I take it.

I don't remember it having these side effects, at least not immediately.

Have I just forgotten, or will the agitation decrease after I've been on it for a few weeks?

At this point, I don't want to up my dose to 20mg/day because I feel so bad.

Hey Scott, this is Seamus2 from a long, long time ago. Can you give me some feedback if you have any personal experience?
What happened to Elizabeth? Didn't she have a lot of experience w/ Parnate?

Thanks!

Hi Diego (Seamus)!

It's nice to see your smiling face. I just wish it would have been under different circumstances.

I need to step out for awhile to attend to a family emergency, but I will reply.

Parnate: Do whatever you need to in order to establish treatment. If that means staying at 10mg until the behavioral side effects wear off, then that's what you do.

I need to think more about this one. Don't give up on Parnate. You will likely need a minimum of 40mg this time around.

Thanks, I look forward to your reply, or anyone else who wants to chime in.

The agitation is almost unbearable, so I hope it ameliorates over time. I'm on day 5 of 10 mg/day and chewing Xanax like candy. (okay, not like candy -- 0.5 mg TID)

I swear I never had this reaction before; in fact, it seems to me I took the whole 30 mg at bedtime -- or could that have been Nardil?

Hope you're well and the family emergency sorts itself out. I saw in an earlier thread you're on a TCA/MAOI combo and then some. Ever tried adding an amphetamine to the mix?

It may be it's just simply not going to work the second time around. The first time I was on Parnate it worked for depression at 20 mg..but hypotension was so bad I had to discontinue (long story)..the second time around I went to 50 mg..not even a partial response for depression and blood pressure was all over the place...mostly in the high range.

For me, this happens all the time. Revisiting meds is frustrating. They may work again but with a whole different set of side effects, or don't work at all.

What does your pdoc think? My experience with MAOI's is the higher the dose, the worsening of side effects, although many have different experiences.

I guess it comes down to the type of side effects you're prepared to tolerate to give the medication a trial..I hope you discuss it with your doctor..we can give our experiences and support on babble, but we're not walking in your shoes..severe agitation and anxiety is awful to deal with. I hope you get some relief soon.

Hi.

Family stuff still not resolved - thanks.

Justherself54 makes a good point about it being difficult for others to know exactly what you are experiencing. My question to you is what alternatives have you not explored yet? I guess the balance-scale with which to weigh the factors that would enter into your decision-making process would contain the question just what is there left to try? For all I know, Parnate is the only drug you ever tried.

Between your last time on Parnate and now, have you ever put yourself through a severe withdrawal experience resulting from an attempt to discontinue a benzodiazepine or any other medication? Any seizure history?

No withdrawal history, no other meds, and no depression for 6+ years. I ran the gamut of ADs beginning with amoxapine back in 1982 or 83 and eventually settled on Nardil for about 5 years, then Parnate. I found it quite effective, I just don't remember the agitation/stimulation.

It could be it's just potentiating the heck out of coffee, so I'll cut back to one cup (from two) tomorrow morning.

Talked to my p-doc about generics. Just likes the brand names better. Is parnate available in brand name?

The name brand is made by Glaxo/Smith-Kline.

If you're in the US, you can get the name brand much cheaper by ordering from Canada. It's about 1/3 the price compared to US.

After two weeks I'm doing much better.
I'm taking 20 mg first thing in the morning, and then another 10 around noon.

The agitation has worn off, thank god, and the depression has eased considerably.

Now the only problem seems to be persistent insomnia and the 2PM nap syndrome. I'd forgotten about the latter!

Heh,

It's fun too look through what's worked and not.

I'd forgotten about the 2 PM nap syndrome.

Began 10 mg TID at 6 AM, 2 PM and ~10 PM on Jan 20th, 2014.

Might be a little too much (for me), but the initial restlessness, anxiety and agitation of the first two weeks 10 mg BID have subsided.
