remeron sleep

Posted by marcus1968 on October 24, 2013, at 11:34:19

Hello, I have been taking close to 1 mg. remeron for 4 months now for insomnia. I started 15 mg. mg for depression but was knocked for a loop and couldn't feel/function. I have found that just a tiny piece of a quarter 1.5 mg? helps me sleep wonderfully but even on that low dose I seem apathetic and lethargic and groggy all day?? can this be right? what would a better suggeston be for sleep. tried ambien etc., already on klonopin 1.5 mg and don't make me tired anymore just less anxiety. thanx so much

Yes, I have had that reaction to low-dose mianserin (Tolvon), I think it was in combination with citalopram. (In combination with paroxetine I tolerated high-dose mianserin.) The side effects you decribe from Remeron may be smaller or disappear if you give it some time.

What about lowering ur klonopin dose? I think the combo is adding to ur lethargy. I take .5mg klonopin at night, and sometimes add a sliver of remeron. I drink coffee next morning, and do fine. But u may need the dose of klonopin u currently take? I was able to keep my klonopin down to .5mg with Remeron when I took it daily, used to take 7.5mg. I tapered it to lose weight, and now do fine most days on .5mg klonopin.

I couldn't stand the way 7.5mg Remeron made me feel until 3 in the afternoon. While I was asleep it was fine. Now I take around 15mg trimpramine which I think is good....it improves sleep like Remeron but does not leave me feeling poisoned all the next day.

However it is genotoxic. I have no idea how important that is.

Sig, trimpramine sounds great. I read a quick summary of it. Is it available in US? Never heard of it, sounds perfect for insomnia. I plan to ask pdoc for it if available here. Thanks

No, I don't know. It's not used much in Australia. No real hangover the next day.

Dry mouth at night and slight anticholernergic related slowing of the guts are my limiting factors, so I keep the dose to one third of a 50mg capsule.

I am sorry that I gave you this answer, I should have read your message more closely. When you have been apathetic, lethargic and groggy all day due to Remeron side effects for 4 months, it is probably best to stop taking Remeron.

Melatonin for sleep, as Sheilac proposed, is worth trying.
http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20131025/msgs/1053006.html

Long-term use of Klonopin, as you mentioned earlier of which you use 1,5 mg, can worsen your depression. When you have mild OCD and bad anxiety and depression ( http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20130930/msgs/1052864.html )
and also has become apathetic because of the Lexapro and/or Remeron, it is difficult to find medicines that both doesn't make you apathetic, that works for OCD and that works for anxiety and depression. Maybe clomipramine and Seroquel could work. But any medication could cause some side effects.

Or you can try augmenting Lexapro with Seroquel, which could help for your anxiety and insomnia, and even your depression.

So here is a summary of what you may discuss with your doctor:
1) Stop taking Remeron, and taper off Klonopin very slowly (use more than two months for tapering) and start melatonin for sleep. Keep Lexapro and add Seroquel and possibly Atarax or Buspar for anxiety.
2) Stop taking Lexapro and start clomipramine + melatonin and/or Seroquel
(Clomipramine is on the list because of your OCD.)
There are also lots of other combinations that may work.

This is only my advice, it could be that your doctor has other opinions.

Correction:
The long answer below was meant for you, marcus1968, not for myself. :-)
