Should I try Nardil?

Posted by brynb on July 5, 2013, at 16:28:35

Without reiterating my situation, I'm on the following meds:

Lexapro
Tramadol
Ativan
Seroquel

While this combo keeps me somewhat functioning on a daily basis, I still have major depressive episodes, swings and anhedonia. I'm finally stabilizing out again after a recent bad bump in the road. I've tried Ketamine and TMS, along with most other psych meds, but to no avail. I've been thinking about switching to Nardil for months but I'm so fearful of the washout period, and also afraid to try an MAOI.

Anyone want to weigh in?

Thanks,
b

I have been taking MAOIs since 1982. I never found the dietary or medication prohibitions an issue. You just need to do your homework and be vigilant. Only once did I have a tyramine reaction. I accidentally ate some pepperoni on a pizza. I was distracted at the time and wasn't thinking. Pizza, however, is safe to eat,as long as the mozzarella is processed and no parmesan has been added to the sauce. The original lists of dietary food restrictions encompassed foods that were actually safe. Try using Internet search engines to locate more modern MAOI diet lists.

Nardil is a remarkably efficacious drug. Side effects and dietary restrictions limit its use, however.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the feedback!

This I know and a lot of my trepidation is that I'm fearful of having to be so vigilant.

That's my reasoning behind wanting to switch; it's been something I've been thinking about doing for a while now. Again, I'm fearful of side effects, however if it allows me to cut down on my current number of meds and really address my recurring episodes, it seems worth it.

Hopefully my pdoc will be onboard with me. Otherwise, I'm thinking it may be time to change docs.

Thanks, Scott. Hope you're still doing well.

You'll have to quit tramadol and lexapro if you want to use Nardil, as using those together with Nardil... can be problematic.

Yes, I know--thank you for mentioning it though. I'm pretty nervous to do the washout; I have an incredibly hard time getting off of Lexapro, and Tramadol has been keeping me a float. Again, I'm not only nervous over potential SEs with Nardil, but also getting off of my current meds to try it.
