Jeroen if no infection especially of the skin it will be hard to get a doc to prescribe an antibiotic. Too much antibiotic resistant forms of bacteria emerging from too frequent use of antibiotics by docs over the decades. Phillipa

My pdoc was willing to try Minocycline and gave me a prescription which I just filled a couple days ago. I have not tried it yet. One thing I'm wondering is, in the somewhat unlikely event I get a significant benefit from it then what? Do I just take this antibiotic forever? How long is it okay to take something like that?

There is a pseudo lupus syndrome & black gums if remember correctly that could occurr. Good question of how long you can take it what did your doc say? Phillipa

Just googled it and saw that for quite a few it actually caused depression when used for skin condition? I don't get it? Phillipa

Hi Bob,

That is a valid question. I wondered myself. However, I have been on it 8 months and seem to be having no side effects. It might be helpful to see how long it gets prescribed for folks with acne. I have had a couple of doctors tell me that acne patients take it for quite some time and they seem to do fine. The psychiatrist who suggested told my regular doctor that it is pretty safe on a consistent basis, and this person is one of the top in the country. That doesn't mean something adverse *can't* happen. It means the risk/benefit profile is okay with me for the time being. So I'm going with it for the time being, and if anything bad emerges, I'll act on it promptly.

I'm not surprised in the least. There are many medicines I've taken in an effort to treat this nasty condition which were ostensibly going to result in improvements and caused further depression instead.

That is encouraging. As long as it doesn't make me more depressed and side effects are not too onerous then I can take it for awhile it seems.

Now I'm curious about the length of time. Time for the google queen to begin her search. Phillipa
