The power of stims to revive curiousity

Posted by Phil on January 2, 2013, at 10:19:29

When I pitched my doctor, with assistance from my therapist, to please add Vyvance(the best)I told him they were the only drug that gave me my curiosity back.
My stepfather, with a 10th grade education, became very successful. He was curious about everything which I knew I was lacking in me.

This is what the experts are now saying makes a child successful in life-curiosity and grit. Not necessarily, being born with or cultivating a high intelligence.

Years and years of depression has beaten the curiosity out of me. Quite sad, really.

Interesting. Schools don't teach curiosity. In history instead of remembering dates etc why not role play different historical figures. Fun and real. Tell stories, whatever. Make kids see what Lincoln was really about.
Sometimes biology was interesting because you were doing hands on stuff. Unfortunately I was still dumb as a rock at it. With my home life it's a freaking miracle I graduated at all.

I drive people nuts as have to know the hows and whys of everything like a kid. So does this mean I'm not crazy as a loon or crazier? Phillipa

If I went to a drug store without stims it was just gray. With stims I was interested in things. Made quite a difference.
But Scott you have curiosity with research and things. Maybe that's part curiosity and 'have to?'

It's hard to say. I tend now only to do the minimum amount of research necessary to get well. The passion is gone. Reading is still laborious, but not impossible. I do find, though, that I will go out of my way if I think I can help someone. And it's good that others keep me on my toes. They force me to look at the most current literature.

I hope you are having a good day, Phil. Mine is pretty good so far.

Doing OK today. My deal is stops and starts. I get going on something and learn everything I can then drop it. It doesn't amaze people how much I can learn about something in a short time but I think it surprises them.
I do stick with some things.
Since the first day I got a computer I can stay on it day and night. I really have to work at letting it go at least a few hours a day. Nothing gets done.

Reading is still a real pleasure of mine, i always have 2 books on the go (one fiction, one non fiction)

Apart from anything else, its an escape from worry and sadness etc

Reading for pleasure is a foreign concept to me. It just doesn't make sense that reading should be anything but a chore and hard labor. It is scary when I hear how easy it is for others to do what is so difficult for me. As I have indicated, I can get through an entire paragraph now reading word-for-word because my condition has improved. I had not been able to get beyond two sentences. I still have to skim. I imagine that there are things that are easier for me to do than they are for others. It is interesting how one illness can look so different from person to person.

Stims temporarily help my depression and for sure boost my curiosity. Too much though--I end up wanting more and more so I can stay up hours on end to research the most random things... :/.

My mother read an awful lot. I think that reading improves writing. That's why my writing is a bit lacking.
I have two books to read. One about an entertainer I loved and one my bro gave me for Christmas about Seal Team 6 that killed Bin Laden. Seal Team Six fascinates me.
Mostly I prefer audio books but space out on them too.

I've only wanted to increase the dose to 60 mg of Adderall because I'm not making it through the day. I don't go up on dose willy nilly bacause I just don't feel the need.
Although when I was on 600 mg in 2002 I got a heck of a lot done right before the heart attack. j/k

ps...even though I'm at 40 mg Adderall I stayed up till 5 am studying with great curiosity the development of ball bearings. Absolutely fascinating. I then went outside trying to break the code of passing cars license plates.
I came back in and ate one spoonful of jello, my only meal of the day.
What's not to love?

Jono a day would not be complete til I read in bed. What has made a big diffence for me also is reading on an ereader. My Nook has the lighted back feature. I love it. Upload new books from Barnes & Nobles site where my Account is. Phillipa

That's why teachers like to put kids on them.
