Wellbutrin: tolerance to anxiety?

Posted by ChicagoKat on November 26, 2012, at 17:18:08

I've tried Wellbutrin a couple of times in the past. But it's always given me anxiety. But, then, I only ever gave it about a week then gave up on it. Does anyone know if a tolerance to the anxiety occurs if one takes it for a longer period of time?

I was just wondering b/c it seems kinda like a mini version of Ritalin, and Ritalin helps me, but I have been getting really bad anxiety about an hour after each dose I take. And I have built up such a tolerance to benzos and to gabapentin, and Nardil seems to have pooped out on me too for helping with anxiety. I thought maybe Wellbutrin might help but actually cause less anxiety than Ritalin does.

And btw, my nasty nosedives into the abyss have stopped. I think they were most likely due to coming off Nardil.

Any advice would be appreciated as I see my pdoc tomorrow.

I was on Wellbutrin twice and anxiety and irritability didn't go away. Plus, unfortunately, it wasn't very effective for me.

Kat one week saw pdoc who thought I was hypomanic. Ended up in the hospital. So for me it didn't go away. But I'm probably more anxious than you as diagnosis is ocd, panic, generalized anxiety disorder. Phillipa

Thanks Phillipa, it seems like it is unanimous thus far. Wow, it put you in the hospital even; how horrible for you :(

Could i suggest

- Taking 150mg SR for 1 week, then increasing to 300mg XR

- Taking hydroxyzine 50mg three times a day for the first couple of weeks (or longer if needed) to help the anxiety

- Combining the Welbutrin with an SSRI such as Zoloft or Lexapro

I found that the jitters did go away after a couple of weeks, even if they dont, if its an effective antidepressant for you, it might be worth using it along with an anxiolytic to control the anxiety

Wellbutrin was good when It was the first antidepressant I have ever been on...i was 16 when I started wellbutrin and adderall....i tolerated it pretty good...but after time I started feeling really wierd, like my brain was electrical overload....then I found out wellbutrin is known to cause siezures at doses 600mg and up but I was on 300...it made have like delirium stuff...getting lost, confused...long time ago...

but Rililin is a dopamine reptake....wellbutrin is both dopamine and NE...its the NE that causes the anxiety...i know it, i was on it again in 2009 I did notice improvement in cognitive function, but the anxiety was bad...I know its NE...dopamine wouldnt give that feeling. But I think FOCALIN would really help you Kat...its a cleaner version of Ritilin...less side effects. But its mainly for ADHD. Focalin is almost a pure form of a dopmaine reptake med....

You could take Wellbutrin with propranolol...that would definely get rid of NE. But still, that's complicated with a doctor....

one last thing Selegine..would be great, the patch ENSAM or something...i've seen it here on babble....that will be a dopmaine med too...

play chess with the doc...learn how his kings and queens are prone to move around...lol

According to the drugs.com interactions checker, Wellbutrin is heavily contraindicated with nortriptyline. I think there were at least two other dangers mentioned besides the typical serotonin syndrome warning that often pops up. I'd forget about it if you're still taking nortriptyline.

I find the generic wellbutrin sr has much less anxiety with it. Not sure it it goes away with time, but it may.
