Wellbutrin/Bupropion Hallucinations

Posted by phidippus on October 9, 2012, at 9:48:39

I started Bupropion XL, 150 mg, two weeks ago and since have experienced hallucinations. I keep on seeing these big obsidian black ants crawling allover everything. Should I continue on the Bupropion and hope the hallucinations go away or should I stop? I'm feeling quite good otherwise.

I can't answer your question. Sorry.

How do you react to methylphenidate? Might it substitute for bupropion at this point?

I have been suffering from moderate depression for about 2 months now. I needed a pick me up.

When choosing a med I couldn't do another AD, because I get seratonin syndrome quite easily. So I opted for Bupropion. So far its working, I'm just getting bizarre side effects. Hopefully the side effects will pass?

I get confused when I'm on Ritalin.

Hallucinations is a known side effect of Bupropion. I'm just hoping they'll go away, because otherwise, the Bupropion is diminishing my depressive symptoms.

hey....wellbutrin has been known to increase activity in the mind...but also it does increase agitation, through dopamine and also more NE and ... well I don't know how to explain it fully but it does weakly mimic amphetamine and it can weakly cause the effects but I've googled wellbutrin with hallucinations and it says it can alter perception with psychiatric situations...also said it can cause delusions and unusal thoughts....let me say I know this for fact that Wellbutrin can greatly exaserbate OCD...but I don't know if that's relevant in this case...

can you switch to effexor or pristiq?

Plus, you said you were on Vyvanse. Vyvanse + Ritalin sounds like a bad combo to me!

I honestly don't know if the hallucinations will pass with time or not, Eric. Maybe your pdoc would know.

I havent experienced any agitation. I'm two weeks into taking it and all I've gotten are these hallucinations

>it can cause delusions and unusal thoughts

Oh, I can't wait

>Wellbutrin can greatly exaserbate OCD

I have OCD and I haven't experienced any worsening of my OCD.

>can you switch to effexor or pristiq?

No. I will either become manic or incur serotonin syndrome.

Vyvanse is certainly a drug to love...I've been on it too :)

I didn't say to stop it, just don't take someone else's suggestion and add Ritalin to it!!!!

How are the hallucinations? Obsidian ants, my my your mind is creative.

Kat
p.s. Did you call your pdoc yet?

If you're suffering halucinations, I'd stop the we,butrin and the Vyvanse, and call your psychiatrist asap. Maybe restart the Vyvanse when the halucinations are gone.

Had a talk with my pdoc. He just wanted to reduce the dose. I'm just leaving it be. No hallucinations today.

That's great news that the hallucinations have abated, Eric. I hope it stays that way too. And do you think the lower dose of Wellbutrin is still helping you?
