Can these meds cause..

Posted by Sheilac on October 9, 2012, at 6:05:02

I love the sleep I get with melatonin. I've heard that it can cause depression. Is this true?

Also, if I need to take Klonopin more consistently, will this cause depression? If so, Is there a better anti-anxiety med that won't result in depression?

Trying to keep it simple.

Thanks.

Hello, I take .5mg klonopin at night. I keep the dose low, and dont drink alcohol, and have never gotten depressed on it. I have a hx of depression, but it usually is preceded by extreme anxiety,so that could be why a benzo works so well for me. Ive used 3.5mg remeron for sleep too. Good luck to you

Of the benzodiazapines, Klonopin is the most likely to cause depression-it decreases the utilization of 5-HT (serotonin) by neurons.

If so, Is there a better anti-anxiety med that won't result in depression?

You can try Gabapentin, Lyrica and Gabitril.

Melatonin can worsen depression in some people, and it can improve depression in others. Since melatonin works so well for your sleep, I don't think increasing your dose of Klonopin would be such a good idea. Benzos can be extremely effective when used for short periods of time, but when used long-term, they can lead to tolerance and interdose withdrawal, which can worsen the symptoms that people are taking them for. I've read that taking vitamin D3 can reduce the chances of melatonin causing depression.

No, Ativan is just a plain ol' benzo.

>what does alrazolam do..effect dopamine?

Alprazolam binds to specific sites on the GABA A gamma-amino-butyric acid receptor. It has no affinity for dopamine.

Is Xanax like diffrent from the other benzos...of course i should know but i'm just curious on its actions... I used to be on it 2mg various times through the day....its strong but it has a short life...lorazpeam lasts longer but it has to be taken higher doses to really sedate, its less than alprazolam.

Alprazolam is classed as a high-potency benzodiazepine and is a triazolobenzodiazepine, namely a benzodiazepine with a triazole ring attached to its structure. Benzodiazepines produce a variety of therapeutic and adverse effects by binding to the benzodiazepine receptor site on the GABAA receptor and modulating the function of the GABA receptor.

Xanax makes me psycho.

Klonopin CAN cause depression in some people

If you find this happens to you, try Xanax. This actualy has mild antidepressant properties, it might be the answer for you.
