Pre-employment drug screen

Posted by Raisinb on October 3, 2012, at 19:19:57

I just got a job offer. Yay, since I've been looking for a better one for months!

However, they sent me an email (they contract with an outside agency) that I will need to pass a drug test within 48 hours. Do I need to worry about the prescribed meds I'm taking? I'm on Prozac, zyprexa, Xanax, and concerta. Obviously 48 hours is not enough time to get these drugs out of my system. Do I need to take in the bottles to show the doctor that I am prescribed these meds?

The two that will show on the drug screen are Xanax and Concerta.

I'd definatly tell the doctor or nurse before you take the test that you're taking them, and have either the pill bottles or a copy of your prescription with you.

They usualy ask you to declare any meds you're taking before you have the test (atleast in Australia)

When I took those drug tests I did not tell them about all my meds. It's just too intrusive and none of their damn business.
They're looking for drugs with an abuse potential. Xanax qualifies. I don't know about concerta. It all depends on what they test for. It's very likely not zyprexa.
I guess it depends on what they want, the bottles? I gave a letter more than once from my Pdoc about the klonopin.

Yes - they tend to look for drugs with abuse potential - benzodiazepaines, stimulants, opoids. Generaly not zyprexa or ibuprofen or blood pressure pills

I've only had one drug test ever. At the time I was taking Provigil and I thought that might be an issue (like the concerta.). I always took it in the AM so I didn't take it that day until after the test. I also asked the person if rx meds would be an issue. She said if the lab found something of concern, they would contact me directly and ask for documentation.

Congrats on the job! :)

Best,
EE

I took a few when Nursing and at each one had to bring prescription bottles of benzos with me. I'd assume they also look at the levels to assure you are not abusing them. And congrats on the job!!!

If you didnt tell them at the interview, an they show on the drug test , you want to hope they dont think you should have been open.

Ah, no new job. This was one a while back. I'm still working as an underpaid independent contractor. But I love what I do. :)

Best,
EE
