Corporate Psychiatry/Psychology

Most studies that you and your doctors are getting your information from are funded by the companies that actually make the drugs.

The people carrying out the studies are paid by the makers of the drugs.

Those who make the drugs have invaded the education of the very doctors that treat you.

There are hundreds of cases of 'cherry picked' results exposed.

Why do people accept these studies as valid while dismissing independent studies?

Huxley.

You make some very fine points.

Which ones?

That's the problem.

Can you find independently financed clinical trials of a drug that were conducted BEFORE that drug was approved for marketing? They are not very common. I would challenge you to find one. If you cannot, then what would you suggest as an alternative?

One must rely upon the fidelity of the scientists conducting the studies, regardless of where the money comes from. I happen to know several. I would take exception to anyone accusing them of corruption. The NIH does not have the funds to shadow every drug being tested in the US. Capitalism has its faults when left unregulated and without oversight, don't you think? Perhaps. However, I'm pretty sure that it worked better than Soviet communism in producing healing agents.

What would you suggest as an alternative to the drug development and approval process?

Perhaps clinical studies should be registered with the FDA in advance so that they can all be reviewed and accounted for. There could then be a committee that judges the acceptability of each study for inclusion in statistics. I don't know what might be the disadvantages of using a system like this.

I think it's a good question as "what if" meds were studied and tested more throughly and for longer in time so that the side effects that are dangerous emerge before the lawsuits seen on TV which scares a lot of others off meds. If an ad is tested for 12 weeks that isn't the normal period of time that one stays on them. Are there any individual non funded trials? Reminds me of the supplement industry no trials no funding so not approved by FDA? Phillipa

I saw Dr Andrew 'Mr Holistic' Weil doing an interview and at the time he was endorsing supplements for one or more companies. They ran tests on these supplements and asked him if he realized that none of them had what they said they had in them. He said, well, I guess I'll have to bring that to their attention.

He makes his own supplements now and if you use his 'vitamin adviser' you better hold onto your checkbook. He makes shrinks look like nice guys.

I just ran my vitamin adviser again. He recommends TEN supplements for me at $140 a month. Nice.

Never could stomach the guy, just on a knee-jerk level 'cause he looks like an evil Santa Claus. (yeah, I have issues with St. Nick, and clowns, and gnomes, and....)

Plus the prices on his website were appalling.
