I hate to say so many negatives about klonopin.I must also say that it calmed me and gave me strength to get thru the things I needed to get thru to get well.I was able to lean on it,and I definately needed it at the time. But,it's the getting off of it that I so loathe.I know, for some its a walk in the park, why not for me???

gadchik, I agree with you. It's difficult not to fret about anxiety meds :) My case was an extreme one. When the time comes I know now to come of very slowly and to do so with a very competent doctor. I do not consider it impossible. The taper study that started this thread was exactly the kind that sent me to the ER. If more doctors understood that there is a larger margin of patients than usually acknowledged for whom that taper will not work, than tapering would be safer. And not impossible and scary. Just slow. Give your lion the respect it is due ; )

That's interesting, because when I tried to do this exact same taper (as instructed by my pdoc) I ended up depressed and suicidal...

I agree! This one is a toughy! I (stupidly) tried to get off of it cold turkey, but I also decided to drop lithium at the same time (doubly stupid!) Words cannot express how physically sick I felt. Headache and neck pain that would not subside, soooo weak and listless I could barely get out of bed. I thought it was b/c of the lithium. Then I had a constant eye twich that stuck around for 4 days (I had already been w/o clonazepam for 10 days)...that's when I got more serious about researching benzo withdrawal--apparently not for the faint of heart! I read something about 'silent siezures' and freaked out about the twitching eye, and immediately took a clonazepam...symptoms of withdrawal gone w/in 24 hrs. Holy la Moly I wish you the very best in getting off of it. Whatever you do, don't go cold turkey!

gadchick,
You wrote,[...any tips on tapering this...drug...].
There is a way out that has been revealed to me if you are a prisoner to a drug. This captivity can be led away. And healing can come to the one in the darkness of dispair.
But this way that has been revealed to me is not for the fearfull. But it has been revealed to me that one finds the way out through great tribulation.
Many of you already know that there are numerous prohibitions to me here from Mr. Hsiung that prevent me from posting here what IMHHO could lead one out of the darkness of depression and addiction into a new realm of light and peace.
But for those that would ever want me to post here what has been revealed to me, be advised that if you follow what has been revealed to me, you will be in a winepress, treaded on, and then cast into a lake of fire.
But this fire will not consume, but purify, and you will go out with joy, and be led forth with peace, and the mountains and the hills will break forth before you in singing, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.
Lou

Some guy on Klonopin here years ago got his dose maybe to .5 or .25 and then rubbed the pill over sandpaper and very gradually sanded away a little more pill. Sounds crazy but I don't doubt it.

You're welcome. I'd use a razor blade. That would be interesting shaving a quarter of a pill with a razor. Nothing a few stiches and pain killers(3 month supply)couldn't handle. :)

gadchik,
You wrote,[...if they (the trees) will clap for me, I can do anything...].
The trees here are symbols, symbols of people.
You see, it has been revealed to me that there is a multitude watching those that are hungering and thirsting to be free from the captivity of the drugs that they take. Those watching are in another realm, and when one is made free, there is great joy among that multitude. And they are the ones clappping their hands, and they do it in the presence of the one that overcomes and the roar of the celebration goes out to all the heavens.
And after that, you will meet other trees. And the good trees will have good fruit and the bad trees will have bad fruit. By this you can know who they are, for by their fruits shall you know them.

I have not read this whole thread but this is what my thing about giving up drugs.

Sometimes you have enough strength and othertimes not.

Sometimes the suffering stirs you to more efforts and sometimes it is the reverse.

There is no such thing as a pain free .....what is this thing where you can apparently withdraw painfree? (A titration!)....well, whatever the name is it, it wans't there for me with benzos or opiates.

I wish I had something to say here but I just don't know. Seems like even the doctors I've had don't really talk about it, the last time I tried to get off Klonopin pdoc gave me the tapering schedule but that was about it, didn't say what withdrawl effects I might have, didn't say if the Klonopin would be added back at a lower dose if I was feeling really bad, etc.

I don't seem to have any problem going from 1.5mg down to 0.25mg. But whenever i try to go below 0.25 it is a complete disaster! herpills

my pdoc just says,if you have symptoms, taper one day, then regular dose next day.She always says, you have panic, and the benzo is best for that, and that she has no worries about me becoming addicted, taking too much, etc.Im tapering, feeling ok,just now though starting to feel a little out of it.Im trying to go from .5 to .25,little by little, then decide whether to go for a no benzo life...only thing that scares me is psychosis and no sleep

I had that exact problem!!!

I went down to .25 mg then couldn't go any lower without severe sleep disruption.

So I just stayed on .25 mg for years. My pdoc was fine with that, and although my sleep doctor would have preferred none he was ok with that dose. Then eventually I think I was in a low anxiety period of time, and started skipping doses here and there. Eventually I got to every other night and from every other night to none was a piece of cake.

I think my state of mind was a factor. I get into periods of time where I sleep all the time, so I took advantage of that and took my time with no pressure. I could have always gone back to .25 mg.

I seriously feel for you. I took benzos (Klonopin, Valium, Xanax, etc) for over ten years and had a serious dependence/addiction to them. IMHO, they are the HARDEST drug to withdraw from--worse than opiates. (I have experience with addiction here!) I had to medically detox (inpatient) from benzos six different times; their fast (7-12 day) taper never worked, and I always got hooked again.

Here's what does work: a longer taper using Valium. Work with your doc and switch to Valium--it will take several months, but it works. And of course, never go cold turkey!

I suffered from severe anxiety for years, but now all I take is Lexapro, and very infrequently, a 5 mg Valium ONLY if I really need it. Now that I'm off benzos, my anxiety is pretty much gone.

Check out this link too: http://www.benzo.org.uk/manual/

Good luck!
