The plan for Moon

Posted by Solstice on March 2, 2012, at 12:55:25

Okay! We saw PDoc this morning, and then saw Moon's therapist.

I am feeling soooo much better.

PDoc and I were on the same page.. Moon seemed much better today (to PDoc). She thinks the med combination she's on need to have a chance to settle and see how it goes, and agrees that the anxiety and overwhelm is over the top and may be causing a lot of her symptoms. Especially since they are acute at school, and aren't really showing up as much at home. (The EPS symptoms appeared to be a result of the lithium.. and now that the lithium is pretty much out of her system, the EPS things are gone).

Moon has the most amazing school counselor. Really 'gets' bipolar - wholly understands how it works. Next week Moon will go to school, but will be in the counseling office doing work on their computer--system classes, or doing class work in their conference room.. otherwise not having to go to the classes she's behind in. She can go to her elective classes. Anyway, this will hopefully relieve the academic pressure. Spring break is the following week, so hopefully by the time school resumes after that, we'll have a much better feel for how effective her meds are for the bipolar.

Moon seems relieved too.

And I have to say that you guys are all so wonderful. This has been so difficult, and being able to tap into the wealth of experience you all have has lessened my own angst and has enabled me to stay focused and feel like there were options and possibilities. I'm just so grateful for all of you.

Solstice... (and Moon)

Boy, having a counselor who understands that it's an actual illness will make all the difference. So glad to hear of the good outcome.

Thanks Papi - and everyone. Moon has done so well yesterday and today - it's like I've got my daughter back. The irritability that was always just below the surface is completely gone. Anger is gone too. She's just been relaxed and engaged.. she's 'reasonable' again... like her cognition isn't influenced by illogical thinking. The 'hair trigger' reactions are gone. Tranquilizer darts haven't crossed my mind in two days!

I certainly can't dismiss the effect of it now being day 10 of Saphris and she's been off the Lithium now for 6 days - so maybe the Saphris/Lamictal combo she's on just now hit their sweet spot.. but still, I think that the academic demands being lifted is what has allowed her brain to respond to the meds. Also - she has not had any EPS events since Thursday. So I'm just a happy little camper over here :-)

Hi Herpills.

How do you benefit from this combination?

What does each drug do separately?

Thanks.

Hi Scott- Well, since adding the Saphris back in my mood has been much better. It helps keep the mania away, but also helps with depression, which the other APs I tried did not (Geodon, Zyprexa, Abilify) Also, sleep is wonderful on Saphris. I know some people say its bad to take these for sleep but honestly I don't see anything wrong especially for me since I know if my sleep gets screwed up it will really screw up my moods.

I have been on Lamictal for probably 4 years at various doses. I do think it helps depression but I don't necessarily think it is a very "strong" med. At least at 150mg I get no side effects.

I know you take Lamictal, but do you have any experience with Saphris? herpills

I took Saphris for a short time. I kind of liked it. I found it calming and I think it helped with sleep. It did not affect me adversely cognitively. I didn't get enough of an antidepressant effect from it, though, so I stopped taking it.

I am very glad that Saphris is treating you well.
