Headache, mild memory loss, and feeling suicidal

Posted by Raisinb on March 1, 2012, at 22:26:48

Just went up to 900 mg of trileptal: could this be the culprit? My pdoc tested my blood when I was on 600 mg and said the trileptal levels were very low. But I feel very bad on the increase. It has only been a few days. Is this something to worry about? I'll see her next week.

I don't know specifically about Trileptal, but almost any psychotropic drug has the potential to make a few people feel worse.

Look at the section on suicide. It describes a class effect of AEDs (antiepileptic drugs) and is not necessary applicable to Trileptal.

If I were you, I would try to continue Trileptal for a few more days. If things don't get better, then I would stop taking it. However, I would call your doctor today if possible.

I am debating calling my pdoc; she's been very unhelpful recently. She never had many answers to my questions, and now she's taken to saying, "well, what do you want to do?" whenever I have an issue. She doesn't seem to have any expertise I can't get from reading the boards here or even crazymeds or wikipedia.

I feel very bad, but I think I can maybe stick it out for a few more days. I don't know whether this is because I went off my meds for a few days a couple weeks ago, or if the Trileptal is specifically making it worse. I guess only time will tell.

For the past several years, my depressions have followed seasonal rhythms: they start in late winter and get worse until between spring and fall I either overdose or something else bad happens. I feel I'm following that trend now. I'm so depressed I'm not remembering things I do and I don't seem to be doing things for well-thought-out reasons. For instance, a few days ago, I felt so bad I boarded my dog for several days on impulse. I don't have the money to do this and thinking back I don't understand why I did it. It's not that it's a totally bad thing I just don't remember why exactly I did it. I seem to be making decisions unconsciously.

That is a very low risk. However, reading that and reading about the cognitive side effects has me scared. However, I do have to say that I got these bad cognitive sides effects (ie I go into a kind of depressive trance where I don't act on any kind of reasoning) before when I was severely depressed. It seems to be the same as last year.

Well, what do you want to do? is a pretty unhelpful response. Once my p-doc said this to me and I said I don't know. He laughed and said, "well you're the doctor." Exactly, I said, you're the doctor. He was out of ideas though so arranged a consultation. If your doc is out of ideas, she should arrange a consult.

I agree. When I ask her questions, she gives me the wiki entry for the particular med. I need to get a new one, just procrastinating.

Feel better.

The above side effects are going away, though my emotions throughout the day are variable. I get a spike of anxiety in the afternoon. Thanks for the feedback guys.
