do i even have a basis for getting upset about thi

Posted by poser938 on February 23, 2012, at 19:12:31

like i have said, i am in the situation im in because of medication having long term side effects on me. but, i have been told many, many times that i need to stop blaming this on the meds i have taken (because who ever tells me this has never heard of meds doing this)

and my current psychiatrist tells me i an "delusional and psychotic" for thinking meds did this to me. my current medical doctor has just told me he "has a different idea on what is causing my problems".

my dad tells me that i should just listen to the doctors and that i am most likely wrong considering i have had 2 psychiatrists tell me they dont believe me.

there has been one psychiatrist that i liked, and she sees patients in a crisis stabilization unit. she told me she likes my situation since "i make her have to think" rather than being a simple diagnosis with a set of certain meds to treat me.

i just hate feeling like i lack so much credibility when i tell a doctor about my situation. it makes me wish i had something more like cancer, rather than a "mental disorder"

Don't wish that on yourself. Can you see the crisis stabalization doc? Frustrating. Docs are ridgid in their thinking not all but a lot. Phillipa

no, actually i cant see the crisis stabilization doc anymore. i had gone to the CSU 3 times within like 6 months, and my 3rd time going there they told me that since i like the doctor there so much, that i cant see her when i go there anymore. they didnt let me see any psychiatrist at all my 3rd time there, except for on the 3rd when the psychiatrist called me in her room to tell me it wasnt her idea for her not to be seeing me. but, they said "i crossed a line when i called the center saying i like going there because the psychiatrist understands my situation." and they said i called "over and over" when in fact i called no more than 5 times in 2 weeks.

i dont know if my posts are starting to seem more hopeless, but i just dont feel that hopeful ever since rTMS didnt work for me. i dont want to seem hopeless.

but the other psychiatrist that my regular pdoc told me about yesterday that might give me ketammine costs like $199 a visit. and i noticed 2 awards hanging up in his office saying "best psychiatrist award for 2010" and one for 2011, also. maybe, he might actually be helpful to me. hes just freakin expensive, but if he can help, even just a little bit, then it would be worth it.

but, i dont get my regular pdoc said he couldnt give me ketamine, while telling me this other one might. maybe he just doesnt think he gets paid enough for something like this?

It seems as if some docs are just not comfortable using certain meds. Don't know why. Probably a liability issue. Who knows. Getting patients well and keeping them well should be their main objective.

Borrow the money get the ketamine. I'm betting your pdoc doesn't even know what it is. Phillipa

Listen, I don't know much about your situation, so take what I have to say with a grain of salt: I have seen a few pdocs in my day and all in all, I see more knowledge on this forum. It isn't totally their fault; neuroscience is in its infancy and nobody knows truly what causes depression, bipolar disorder, and other things. All they do is make educated guesses. But if you truly know in your bones that a med is having a certain effect on you, I'd say go with your gut. Don't worry so much about them believing you. You can work with a pdoc and have a relationship of "collegial skepticism" (what I call it) for each other's opinions. At the end of the day it's up to you to take what you think is best. They are there to offer what they know, but in the end, nobody really knows yet.

thanks, that is a good way to put it. i like coming on this site and getting your all opinion because i also feel like there is more knowledge on here than most psychiatrists have. i just get so down feeling when it seems like the only people that might help me with this dont think im credible. it took me a couple of years until i started realizing exactly what was going on with my brain and these meds, and my current pdoc just straight up tells me i am wrong without even considering it. i mention that my brain might react so weird to meds because of when i had encephalitis 10 years ago, resulting in me being in a coma for 5 days, and he still doesnt consider it. but anyways.... im just going to keep on pushing.

So, I just got an email from a favorite former pdoc of mine (she saw me through the hell that is grad school.). Anyway, she mentioned that recently they have been using a company by the name of AssureRX to get pharmacogenomic testing. Apparently this company provides genetic testing to tell your MD what antidepressants and antipsychotics you are most likely to respond to. Might this help you? Google it. I thought it sounded interesting and when I read your post, I wondered if it could help you.

Best,
EE
