okay, so call me crazy, but .. (valium properties)

I'd still been feeling crazy anxious on 20mg of Lexapro, despite two weeks having passed. So I decided to investigate confounding factors. I'm completely off stimulants (caffeine, dexedrine, nicotine), so no problems there.

Then I decide to google the anti-histamine I've been taking at night, Vallergan Forte, and notice its metabolite is the basis for a lot of anti-psychotics and that known adverse side-effects include agitation. I could've sworn I felt better following the one night I forgot to take it. So last night I experimented by not taking it and, hey presto! I'm back so my super-anhedonic, flat, demotivated but non-anxious state on Lexapro.

I then take my morning Valium dose (5mg) and notice that once again I'm feeling slight heart-fluttering, a little more nervous. I know the chances are slim, but is it possible I might be having a paradoxical reaction to Valium as well? (And please no comments from Phidippus declaring me a hypochrondriac). I know that 10mg induced outright anxiolysis, but things have been more murky with this 5mg dose. Is there a potential dose-curve where 5mg could be causing a paradoxical reaction that 10mg does not? Just would be curious to hear from someone who knows - ed_uk, are you out there? - so I can least rationally observe things over the next few days.

I remember a poster a few years ago who had a paradoxical reaction to valium. Think the posters name was crazychick? As for the doseage difference no idea and I will look up the antihistamine as don't do well on any of them. Phillipa

The antihistamine does say be careful with meds that are used for treating anxiety? Could it interract this way for you with the valium? Phillipa

Thanks for looking into it, Phillipa. I'm not sure whether it was interacting with the Valium or Lexapro, but I definitely feel better off it. Still a little anxious, like I say, and I feel like it is tied in with taking the Valium dose.

You are not the first person here to report this reaction.

What I can say is that just a little of a benzo sometimes makes me feel worse (vague and uneasy), whereas more will likely reverse that.

Sigi I've not heard this but if the dose was too low some anxiety would still be there and higher dose would or might eliminate the rest? PJx

I have paradoxical reactions to many benzodiazapines. I don't think there's an inverse dose relevance, however-it would follow Valium would cause more of a reaction at a higher dose, not a lower one. Perhaps you may need a different benzo.
