Anafranil + Sexual Side Effects

Posted by Golfer1983 on December 7, 2011, at 16:46:20

Hi All -

I have been on Anafranil 25mg for awhile now and it's a WONDER DRUG for OCD / Anxiety / Depression. I am able to do EVERYTHING. Go out with friends, work, have zero depression, etc. I'm brighter and happier.

The ONLY side effect is severely impaired sex drive. I have lost desire for sex, for porn, etc. And it's MUCH harder to get aroused. This will be terrible for a relationship.

This is the only med that is so incredibly effective at fighting my OCD so I'd like to look for answers for the sexual issues.

Does anyone have experience with Wellbutrin (addition), Viagra, Cialis, Ginkgo, Yohimbe, etc. My first option is to lower the dose and see if I can go to 15mg etc. and get relief from OCD AND get more sex drive.

Any thoughts welcome.
-Cameron

Finding the lowest effective dose can be effective to some extent. You could start by reducing to 20mg and go from there.

Viagra and Cialis do not affect libido, only erectile function. Certainly, they improve erections and this can improve confidence, but they do not have any direct effect on desire. They might be useful if you were in a relationship. Bear in mind that they do not facilitate orgasm.

There is a risk of seizures when combining Wellbutrin with Anafranil. This combination would not generally be prescribed.

I hope you find the solution :)

Wellbutrin can sometimes reverse the sexual side effects of ADs and is often prescribed to do so.

I take Anafranil as well and it has no impact on my sex drive, however it causes me anorgasmia, a terrible state where one cannot achieve orgasm. I have tried many things to correct this problem and I found two solutions: add Mirtazapine or Viibryd. Mirtazapine can enhance sex drive and Viibryd is a 5ht1a partial agonist-5ht1a receptors govern sex drive and can increase it.

I would not lower your dose of Anafranil. 25 mg is a relatively low dose and I fear going below that will render it inneffective.

I tried Viagra and Cialis, however just because I got rock hard doesn't mean I could c*m. Frustrating.

I have exactly the same thing, my sexual desire is intact (perhaps even stronger), but the anorgasmia is really frustrating.
I did not find mirtazapine very effective for Anafranil's anorgasmia. What dose did you use?
I'm still thinking of throwing in Wellbutrin.
Or I've read that over time the anorgasmia gets better on its own...don't know about that but hopefully it does.

I cut my Anafranil in half to 100 mg and started taking 30 mg of Mirtazapine.

The anorgamsia never got better for me. I eventually decided to switch to another AD.
