Oxcarbazepine any experience?

Posted by Ben on December 8, 2011, at 11:56:00

I am BP II and take (beside Parnate) mood stabilizers. Lithium, valptoat, Lamictal and Abilify. The problem is a strong tremor (but the Lithium level should be okay. My pdoc wants me to switch to Trileptal. I also have strong attacks of tiredness, In the evening I could sleep at 6 in the evening. Any advivice with Trileptal please?

Not bipolar but took a low dose of 150mg for about a year and had no side effects at all. Is it good for bipolar as I took it for augmenting an SSRI. Only reason stopped it was didn't notice a diffence and was expensive on medicaire. Phillipa

When I was diagnosed bipolar II initially my pdoc added lamictal and trileptal to my ssri and antipsychotic. I became stable very rapidly. I would say I found a safe baseline within a few weeks. I had been either full blown psychotic or close to it for about a year.

I did very well on the lamictal/trileptal combo for several years until I started to have weigh issues. My doc swapped the trileptal for topamax as it suppressed appetite. I never had any side effects other than weight gain and you could probably contribute that more to my antipsychotic. I would give it a fair shot.

I don't understand why you need lithium, lamictal and trileptal on board though. Seems like you either go the lithium route or the anticonvulsant route. I'd be tired too if I took all that and abilify to boot.

I just started it about five days ago. So far, my mood is excellent. I also am combining it with Lamictal, also Zoloft. The only side effects I notice are tremor and sleepiness. The sleepiiness isn't overwhelming, though. I am taking 300 mg twice a day.

I didn't mind trileptal when I took it. It was a fairly tollerable mood stabilizer for me.

Hi Linkage can you let me updated of your trial with Trileptal? I started with 60mg twice a day (liquid) and then I should go slowly up. My pdoc believes that he could combine it with Valproate when both drugs are taken in smaller increments than usual. I have tremor of Lithium, the combo wit Valproate and this with Lamictal. So it would be good when I could get rid of the Valproat and Trileptal would work without so much tremor!

Its been a while since I took it, but I don't remember tremor like I had with lithium.

3 mood stabilizers is probably too much. You might try trileptal and a low dose of lithium.

Does nothing for depression. Can cause anxiety. Can kind of screw with your thinking. I hated it.
