Should I go back up on wellbutrin sr (bupropion)

Posted by Zyprexa on November 8, 2011, at 22:44:44

Ok I was taking 200mg for the last year or so, then 2 months ago down to 100mg. Should I go back up to 200?

Since the decrease I seen my ratings at work go from being at the top of the list, down to the bottom now. Also I've gotten so lazy I don't leave the house except for work. Have not been to the gym since the first week of decrease. People at work tell me I look depressed and need a hug. I'm smoking more now. Up from 1/2 cig a day to 3 a day. I'm having dreams about using drugs, like crack and pot. Which I don't want to do.

The good things that happened. I have an easyer time talking to people. I'm not anxious.

Theres more just can't think of it right now.

sounds like my experience with wellbutrin. Good for motivation and energy, bad for anxiety.
Ive tried some other drugs that work on NE and DA and they all seem to raise my anxiety levels. so I guess its not just WB.

man, that is rough. I don't know what to say. Do you think you'll adjust? I mean, do you think you can make a go without the wellbutrin, or maybe find something else for depression (Lamictal is working quite well for me, for instance) ?

Can you try something else, like Provigil or low-dose Ritalin? I know it sounds strange, but I tolerated low-to-moderate dose stimulants better than the more activating antidepressants. There's some research showing that people with psychotic disorders can benefit from carefully dosed stimulants. In addition to helping with the depression and what not that come with the illness, they help counteract sedation and drug-induced cognitive problems. Just a thought.

Anyway, I hope things get better for you. There are other drugs that hit dopamine and norepinephrine somewhat; I think high dose Effexor does that, but lower doses are more SRI/SNRI.

Good luck!

Think I'm just going to give up on the bupropion.

What is your rationale for discontinuing bupropion rather than returning to the dosage that worked well for you? What was it about your experience with 200 mg of bupropion that led you to decrease the dosage?

Yes, I wanted to ask this question as well. What were the issues you had with the dose up at 200?

You could try some other NRIs to see if they do anything. But for me, NRIs also can cause anxiety.
I might look into some of these herbs / supplements that supposedly have MAOI activity.

Doc figured out it was making me anxious. Which the zyprexa was counteracting. So she first reduced the perphenazine and the wellbutrin. The perphenazine reduction didn't work, so she put me back up on perphenazine and asked if I needed to go back up on wellbutrin as well. I said now when I found out she was also reducing the zyprexa. The zyprexa reduction worked out so she reduced it more. All the time I was feeling like I still needed the wellbutrin, but she was not convinced it wouldn't raise anxiety and then I would need to go back up on the zyprexa again.

Have you had any experience with tricyclic antidepressants?

I bet you would have responded to nomifensine had it still been available. It was a potent inhibitor of both dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake. I am not a big believer that dopamine reuptake inhibition contributes to the antidepressant properties of Wellbutrin, although it is probably pro-noradrenergic. I am sure Sheldon Preskorn would disagree with me.

So your doc felt you were depressed and upped the wellbutrin? And the same amount of lowered zyprexa and perphenazine? Phillipa
