This is depression-books + a song

Posted by gadchik on October 26, 2011, at 15:41:16

After I came through the fog of depression,I read many books about it, hoping to find comfort in what others have been thru. Noonday Demon and Darkness Visible are 2 that really captured, for me, what the illness felt like. What books have done that for you? And when I was able to listen and enjoy music again, Fix U by Coldplay, was the one that gave me hope. What song did that for you?

Noonday Demon kept me from going insane during a very dark period.

This wasn't about giving me hope, but about feeling loss and sadness, but they are connected, aren't they?

Noonday Demon is an atlas of depression.it thoroughly goes thru what it feels like, talks about the meds used, told from the perspective of the author whos had major anxiety, depression, and others who have been there. Its so informative,I checked it out from library.I think I'll read it again.Darkness Visible is by william styron who fought depression as well, and is very good at describing it.His daughter recently wrote a book about what he was like,I believe its called Reading My Father,I loved that as well. This is another thing I do, before bed,I always have a good book to read!

Noonday Demon sounds very good. I read with a Nook so can adjust font size and not wear glasses wonder if Barnes & Nobles has it for the Nook. I read at night also when get in bed. Found Robert Parker books mystery but light were good. Now reading Author name of Marie Force. Mystery also. Now in the Noonday Demon Does the guy recover and are we familiar with the meds? Thanks again Phillipa

Thanks Gadchik! Very cool that you found books and songs to help you along!

I've heard of Darkness Visible just haven't read it. Reading on Depression Forums and different people's accounts of their own depression comforts me I guess. I don't feel so alone!

Thanks again for sharing!
