Maybe this was a manic episode?

Posted by linkadge on October 21, 2011, at 19:47:28

I don't know what happened this week.

I was having insomnia, but more than that.

When my brain would not shut off for a few nights in a row, I started getting really angry and I ended up smashing my lamp. Anyhow, ativan did nothing at all. Clonazepam worked. Whats the difference? Clonazepam is supposedly better for mania. Was this mania?

I don't know.

What kind of lamp was it?

I do not think you were manic. Clonazepam has a more complex mechanism of action than Ativan.

Next time, before you go days without sleep, take some Seroquel.

I wouldn't worry about diagnosing it. You found an effective drug, so if/when it happens again, you've got a go-to pill.

As someone who has also been dealing with insomnia this week, I would call that understandable frustration.

Unless you have a history of BP before you ever touched a psych med, I would be cautious about using a med reaction to diagnose behavior.

PS - I hope the lamp wasn't too expensive

It could be a result of being somewhere on the bipolar spectrum. Insomnia is of course part of the mania package, so are anger outbursts. You do seem to go through phases, so maybe you are bipolar and you did have manic type episode.

The outburst very well could have be a result of inner anger-along with outward frustration. Therapy and the right medication can help resolve this. Therapy will take much longer of course. I found that medication worked to treat the symptoms, but the anger was still there. Therapy helped me get to the source of the thing/things I was angry about for so many years so I was not as likely to get angry about sh*t that I did in the past. I still have not resolved all of my inner anger. It's hard work, like everything else in therapy, but well worth it and the only real way to solve any issue long term.

Some benzos are more sedating (temazepam, flurazepam, clonazepam) and some are less sedating and more tranquilising (lorazepam, alprazolam, bromazepam)

The fact that clonazepam plus zyprexia made you sleep doesnt mean anything except that you needed a strong sedative to help get you off to sleep. Leave the diagnosis to your doctor.
