Gabapentin and disinhibition?

Posted by floatingbridge on October 9, 2011, at 16:20:52

I increased per pdoc's instructions gabapentin to 900-1200mg. (I also increased emsam to 12mg.)

Last night, instead of sleeping, I was wide awake and felt kinda high. This might sound good to some people, but it scared me. Also, my vision has blurred. (An sx of gabapentin I found out.)

I felt odd. I had a bad experience with Lyrica (blurred vision, mood dysregulation). I am thinking the gabapentin is too
high with the increase in Emsam and that the cost/benefit ratio may no longer be in my favor.

Could this sense of 'disinhibition' I feel abate with time? Has anyone else felt this effect?

Thanks.

Yes I felt so "stoned" during the day on it I would go into a store and forget my purse then think it was funny- that's when I got off it- it was fine for sleep only but during the day was too trippy for me

Hi FM, were you taking it for pain?

Yeah. I tried it earlier on, 300mg during the day, and it was difficult to function. My doc was talking about taking even more, but I am not seeing the results I saw at 600mg. It was hit or miss sleeping w/o benzodiazaphine help, but 900mg isn't proving any more reliable. The first night I slept, but I'm awake again. Though not crazed. Dropped down to 600mg again. Will call doc I guess.

How are things with you?

It could abate with time but only by giving you a habit.

I think the original move to increase Emsam and gabapetin together was a mistake.

You had your reasons, of course.

That visual thing is just something gabapentin does.

I did have my reasons, but in retrospect, they were not good enough to warrant going through with.

I already have a few habits. We are trying to move me off the tenazepam for sleep. And Xanax.

Plus adding some pain relief.

Somehow I thought of gabapentin as more benign. Relatively, I suppose. It's difficult to imagine taking as much as the doc was talking about. That would be some habit.

My personal prejudice is for a maximum of 600mg per day in a single dose.

I take 300 and that seems justifiable.

On long flights though I have taken large doses....1200mg to basically take me out.

As with benzo's I would recommend Lyrica and Gabapentin be used at most twice a week. I do find them effective when used in this manner at your optimal dose.

That's an interesting thought. (Though with how I felt, I would be concerned about being in public.) We are hoping to travel again in the spring.

I am dropping back to 600mg. I seem to gain nothing at 900mg. I was hoping for extra pain relief. I don't know. I gave it three days. An odd thing to was it made my feet and hands hot and tingling.

I agree that would be optimal. Though doesn't Lyrica have some kind of cumulative effect? I am probably misremembering.

Frequency would depend, though, on what someone is trying to treat and the severity of symptoms.

Thanks.

And not just your feet and hands. It makes all of you hot when you take enough.

I wonder if that is why my feet swelled up? It had been 24 hours in the air.

I left out the sensation of swelling in hands and feet. You know, always on the lookout for TMI at once.

But I bet you, yes. Or as we say here, bingo.

24 hours in the air?

Hi fb
I was taking for anxiety and mood stabilization- didn't really work- was worse than benzodiazepines for me .... Things are ok here- been worse and been better- miss my "normal" where everything wasn't so flat and uninteresting- I would settle for 40 percent .... Feeling about 15 percent oft old self
