TSH is high

Posted by Deneb on October 4, 2011, at 14:08:07

Saw pdoc today and she said all the test results are good, but then when I asked about TSH she said it was high. Apparently my GP had sent me the requisition for the TSH test. Pdoc didn't seem concerned at all so I must be OK. She added the T4 test.

I hope I get thyroid meds for this so that I can reverse some of my weight gain.

Pdoc really really wants me off the Risperdal asap. She really does not like it. She suspects it is causing problems. My Risperdal got reduced to 0.25mg.

I'm doing pretty well I guess. She's happy that I'm eating healthy now and losing weight. She still wants me to do more exercise though. She mentioned that my weight loss was a little rapid. She doesn't want me to fall into the trap of losing and gaining weight repeatedly.

I'm really happy with my weight loss so far. I've lost 9 pounds and I'm second place in one of the weight loss competitions. I'm in 3 weight loss competitions now and I think I actually have a good chance at winning some money!

I can't wait until I'm thin! I think this time I will actually be successful and maintain my weight loss because I'm not obsessed with counting calories this time. I just eat when I'm hungry. I'm also prepared to eat this way for the rest of my life. I hope I settle down to a low weight.

I still eat junk food once in a while and I don't freak out and fall off the wagon now. My goals are long term and overeating one meal is not going to make a difference.

Deneb did you ask for a copy of your labs? Do you know the number of your TSH? Also you contradicted yourself didn't you as you say you want to lose weight then say you have. And in three competitions for weight loss. Not good in my opinion only to be a weight loss competition. If you are concerned about your thyroid google Mary Shoman. She's also on facebook. I don't know what the numbers are, but TSH is high. GP sent me a requisition in the mail to get another TSH test. Pdoc added the T4 test. I'm supposed to them the tests done in a couple of weeks.

I hope something isn't really wrong. I've never had any real physical health problems before.

I hope thyroid medicine will make me lose the weight I've gained, if I need medicine.

Since weight loss seems important to you, your progress is great!

As for thyroid, those tests are actually not very helpful without knowing what Free T3, Free T4, and thyroid antibodies are. Without including those in a comprehensive thyroid exam, the TSH and T4 values alone do not paint a very good picture of what's actually going on.

Another issue is the supposed normal reference range used, which often will vary from lab to lab. Furthermore, those references ranges are for general usage but do not include all individual cases. For example it is quite possible for someone to be hypothyroid and yet test as normal or even hyperthyroid. Response to thyroid med/herb trials is really the only way to confirm for sure if there is a thyroid issue involved. As in the previous example, someone with all the symptoms of hypothyroid....yet they tested as normal....can respond wonderfully to thyroid treatment....meaning the test was wrong the person was actually hypothyroid.

We can measure the amount of hormone in the blood, but that gives us no clue as to whether it is being received at the docking station on the receptors. Other things such as infection debris or metals or other contaminants can clog those. So in those situations a person will appear normal in a test, but in reality their hormone isn't getting the job done because of competition and so more of the hormone is needed to compete.

Anyway, I'm not a doctor and this is all just general discussion stuff, but I just wanted to point out that thyroid issues are not as clear cut as most doctors seem to convince themselves it is.

Hmmm...so could it be that even though my TSH is high I don't have hypothyroid?

Can stress screw up my thyroid?

I was pretty much on a starvation diet before my blood got tested. TSH is high. Could stress from my diet cause it to be temporarily high?

What causes high TSH anyways? Could it be cancer? I'm getting worried.
