Rash?

Posted by floatingbridge on September 27, 2011, at 16:25:58

The spot where I had the lamictal-timed, invoked, whatever rash has flared a bit. It was completely gone.

The only thing that has changed is an increase of gabapentin.

I'm not prone to rashes.

It's a tiny spot, like 1"x1". It appeared yesterday and today looks blistered again. And itches. Same spot.

My pdoc looked at it, what, two weeks ago as it receded.

I don't know. I imagine if it continues I need it looked at again. Weird.

fb,
You wrote,[...rash has flared...looks blisterd..itches...I need it looked at...].
What could be unbeknownst to the Dr is that there could be the case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
To have this diagnosed is important because of the risk of disfigurement, blindness or death.
If you go anyhwere for a diagnosis, ask if the person there could identify SJS. A burns institute could.
Now there is the fact that people taking Lamictal can get SJS.

Where is this spot located?

Friends,
If you are interested in what drugs can do to you, I am requesting that you view the following video. If you do, could you ask yourself if the benefits outweigh the risk for you if you are taking drugs?

I have a high IgE which, I am told, mediates mucous production in sinuses etc.

Just about every pharmaceutical aggravates this, though not most herbs.

Gabapentin does.

I wonder if it something like that....an aggravation of an inflammatory process?

FB I have some spots that frequently flair so to speak. I think they could be bug bites or a touch of eczema. Did you try some cortisone cream? Area where you place the patch is also a possibilty. Defer to Sigi on the other med never took it. Bet it will be fine. Love Phillipa

Hi Lou,

Thanks for your response and concern. I appreciate it.

I don't think it is SJS, yet it has more than crossed my mind enough to second guess and to post here. I have seen a few pictures, mine looks like poison oak or ivy, depending.

It's on my inner forearm, a few inches above my wrist.

Lamictal can cause this reaction, but I am wondering if now I have a response provoked by the lamicil that is going to become recurrent.

I'll just keep an eye on it today. I will remember your advice about seeking out a person qualified to diagnose SJS.

Thanks,

fb

Hi Scott,

Left inner forearm, a few inches above the wrist, not occurring on the other arm. Maybe it is what sigi says below.

It hasn't progressed since this a.m. at all.

The odd thing is, when starting lamictal, I felt really uncomfortable in my chest in a way that Xanax wouldn't
touch. I thought anxiety, then, no, hypomania. It was a very unpleasant sensation. It remitted completely upon discontinuing lamictal as did the rash. Well, I feel that darn feeling today.

Can an allergic or inflammatory process cause such a
sensation? Jeez.

I'm sorry to go on. I've never had an allergy before except to anesthesia.

Thanks.

IgE? This is ringing a bell. So you're saying you can get a response similar to what I might call hay fever?

Did you test yourself from a kit or through a doc?

This would be very inconvenient. If you keep your
gabapentin at 300mg, do you avoid elicting a reaction?

Okay, something to think about.

Is there an IgA as well?

Hi Phillipa,

Well it hasn't progressed. Last time cortisone cream did not help. I haven't tried today. I think it will be okay, too. Just kinda weird and it's certainly a new phase if I am going to get rashes to things because I haven't until now.

Now I'm thinking maybe what sigi says. I'll just watch it. Talk to my doc. Well, pooh. You know?

Hope it resolves. I got enlarged lymph nodes in my armpits on Lamictal and checked them obsessively, was very scared that I could have a systemic allergic reaction, but I waited it out and it was fine. They don't even warn people about it it's so rare, but of course I got it. I'm glad I didn't overreact and do something, well, rash, like go off of it. So, I'm sure it will be fine. Plus, with SJS, rashes don't occur in a vacuum, you would feel quite sick as well, would you not?

Yeah, there's IgA, IgE and IgG.

One of these deals with the integrity of the gut lining, one mediates allergies proper, and IgE.....I dunno, my sinuses get more mucuous.

My integrative doc had me tested at the beginning. Way above normal, but not too terrible. At 300mg gabapentin it is something I can live with. I just try to keep the drug load to a minimum.

It's receding. Go figure. Thanks. (nm)

Interesting.

When I took lactimal (I went up to 400mg).

The first place my rash appeared was exactly where you describe it.

Started there and then appeared on my other arm. Then I started having Hive like reactions. Very spectacular!! and scary.

Now a year after ceasing lactimal it has turned into full blown enzcema which is quite painful. Still also get extreme hive reactions regularly. e.g if I get a massage it looks like I have been flayed with a cat of nine tails.

Yeah, Huxley, ibam hoping it did not provoke an immune response. I hope that was the last of it. No eczema and it has been maybe a month. The small patch was very much like hives. I am definitely keeping an eye on this.

I am so sorry your reaction has become chronic. That stinks. You got higher in your dosage if I recall. I stopped at about day six or seven at 25mg. Didn't get too far.

Eczema from lamictal? Wow from Jeroen's psychosis to this some strange things have happened. Now I'm thankful all I had was the horrible saiva and spitting at 50mg. Phillipa

Thanks FB. Hope I didn't alarm you. I got up to 400mg and persisted for 6 months even with the rash symptoms after I was guaranteed by my doctor that it wasn't SJS. Probably should have recognized that it wasnt right for me earlier.
