Stimulants and benzos

Posted by rjlockhart04-08 on September 19, 2011, at 22:22:02

You know why did they actually used to make these combinations?? You know Like Dexamyl amobarbital and dextroamphetamine. The only places I got info from this where from the OLD ads from the 60's that they where made for social anxiety and low motivation.

I used to be on this. Xanax 2mg X 3 daily and Dextroamphetamine spansules 15mg X 4 daily. I used to take the dexedrine in the morning and pop xanax when I needed it. But I overly used these medication because they where given to me like candy presciptions. I had anxiety and i would take x's when I needed them and they slowed down the effect of the amphetamine but gave it more of a relaxed stimulation. When It was over ugh!! i couldnt handle one day with out being miserable and agitiated over the withdrawl from both medications.

Still today they do these combinations to certain people with certain conditions. But they don't use barbiturates anymore its mostly benzos.

They fell from favour because they were highly addictive, and they were far less effective than antidepressants such as Nardil, Tofranil, Parnate and amitriptyline.

I think you should maybe stop looking at anything psychiatric--drug ads, current treatments, anything at all--and focus on getting better. Of course, I also think you should try tapering off your meds and trying to live w/o a shrink for a while.

The other day I was listening to a radio philosophy program about, if I recall correctly, an American philosopher called Pursey who, I was interested to hear, ruined his health and made himself objectionable by his habit, as was common at the time, of consuming morphine and cocaine, and all from the local chemist shop.

This was so pleasant to think about that I thought about it for ages.

Charles Sanders Peirce, pronounced purse, born 1839. Not a bad time. Dead before the C20 hit the fan.

The founder of John's Hopkins Medical School and hospital was a cocaine addict who stopped cocaine by using morphine. He remained a morphine addict until his death. I can't recall his name.

Freud was a cocaine addict for many years.

So are you telling that drugs can be a solution?

if they help me I would try them

Drugs can be part of a solution, they are rarely a totl soluion.

Amphetamine/sedative combinations were in general a disaster, very highly addictive, very abuseable, very prone to doseage creep

Is that essentially saying that anything that is half way pleasant will be a disaster?

That's my opinion, anyway.

I was googling and came across this post. I think it's time for me to come back to the board. How are you guys?

One could theoretically have these drugs compounded together, but really there is no rationale for doing so--except the obvious one.

I had to stop taking Nardil due to 50%+ weight gain. To make a long story short, I am now on 4mg/day clonazepam and 60mg/day d-amphetamine. I'm now seeing the psychopharmacologist that I used to see after not being able to see him for a long time. I tried to go med-free for a while, but the agoraphobia and anxiety became too much to bear.

It took a long time to finally get into see him, and in the interim I was just going to a GP who was writing the clonazepam. Now that I'm back with my preferred doctor, he wants me off of the clonazepam eventually; I tend to agree. I turned to it as a band-aid for the social phobia and anxiety, but frankly Nardil monotherapy was better than the clonazepam alone.

I expressed a desire to start Marplan (I just can't deal with the phenelzine weight gain), and he said that he isn't ruling it out but he wanted me to try Viibryd first. Well, I looked it up when I got home and it basically seemed to be roughly (but not exactly) equivalent to taking an SSRI + buspar. SSRIs make me _more anxious_ and exacerbate my "inattentive ADD" (I really don't like using these terms, but it's a convenience we must live with.)

I tried to get to 20mg, and on day 8 I had to stop it. I had GI upset, felt emotionally flat and a vague malaise. I don't know how people tolerate that stuff; I literally could not bring myself to take another 20mg tablet. It felt like I was poisoning myself, something which I've only experienced from Depakote (which apparently I'm allergic to).

The best of these combinations was probably Desbutal. I'm curious to if there is even _one_ individual in this country who is prescribed Desoxyn and Nembutal.

I really hope he goes for Marplan + Dexedrine and a slow benzo taper.

One underutilized combination is clonazepam + galantamine + stimulant. Read up.

Sorry, brain fogged out now.

But I guess I'm back. ;-)
