Meds for racing thoughts

Posted by markwell on July 27, 2011, at 12:28:55

I'm still having a horrible time with racing thoughts. Has anyone found anything other then risperdal to be helpful? It is driving me insane!

I also take tegretol. I was thinking maybe this new anti depressant might help....viibryd? Abilify {5mg) helped but I can't take ap's. I think it must be stress related, I don't know.

I guess it depends on what is causing the racing thoughts? Is it severe anxiety or is it mania? Not sure what you have tried already? If you haven't had a go with Zyprexa or Seroquel you could start with either of those. If you can't tolerate APs you could try lithium carbonate or maybe even sodium valproate.

Does your racing mind keep you awake at night? I've tried googling racing thoughts and I don't get much help. I thought someone here would have experienced them and a solution.

If you're still wanting to go the AP route, then Zyprex is your best bet here.

Other medications I would recommend trying are lithium and depakote.

Supplements I would suggest are New Chapter supercritical holy basil, Magnesium glycinate(400 to 600 mgs), glycine, taurine, inositol, and lysine.

Sorry your not doing so hot, hope you find relief soon!

You could use some depakote. Your doctor is foolish for getting you on at least 750 mg.

For anyone that is not on an atypical antipsychotic already, I would try depakote before zyprexa, then try zyprexa if depakote and all else fails. Some lithium combined with depakote may synergize and give you more relief.

Risperdal did not work for me. I've found zyprexa and perphenazine to work. Very well I might add! Zyprexa in particular has been a lifesaver for more than a decade. Perphenazine I've been taking for 3.5 years. It seems to be helping the zyprexa.

Philipa one of my first symptoms was racing thoughts, big problem for me. I was also very psychotic and holucinating. I've never had good results with mood stabilizers, like depakote and lamictal. Its always been the zyprexa that fixes me.

Talk to the doc about taking metformin if you are not already.

Are you exercising 5 days a week? I'm talking about more intense exercise.

Have you ever considered a paleor or primal diet? This would require you to eliminate grains and run mostly off of the carbs you get from good veggies, fruits, and saturated fat(much of it from animal protein). You might feel much better on this diet also. Check out mark'sdailyapple.com

Also, consider a powerful resveratrol supplement, something from Revgenetics. Resveratrol can increase insulin sensitivit, I beleive through activating AMPK. Other supplements/foods that may help with your blood sugar issues are Holy Basil(it lowers blood sugar and can also help mood), blueberries(enhance insulin sensitivity), Cinnamon(better used as supplmement), Bilberry, alpha lipoic acid(this is a must! 2 or 3 times a day), Gymnema Sylvestre, and Bitter Melon.

Your doc may be concerned about depakote effecting your weight and then negatively impact your blood sugar. I think there are ways to offset these possible side effects. Also, when you take Depakote, you need to supplement with L-Carnitine and L-Methylfolate, as depakote can deplets stores of both folate and carnitine.

Hope you doc comes to his senses soon. I think the racing thoughts will pass, but they should be kept in check, and the state that comes along with them, as further damage can take place. Good luck.

perphenazine is a typical antipsychotic, that does not have weight gain and probably does not affect blood sugar. It is sedating and is similar to zyprxa.
