Nardil and weight loss

Posted by lifelover on July 22, 2011, at 15:48:42

Watup guys! I curently weight around 232 pounds. Since being on a water diet the pounds are coming off very fast.I am also adding exercise into the mix and watching what I eat and how much I eat My goal weight is to be at 170 and this is definitly a realistic goal for me. However I have been depressed and dealing with sa for over a year now since I had to go off nardil. Its been real tough on me and limited my life in all aspects. Nardil is really a lifesaver for me and I need it now! I wish, but I believe I made the right choice in telling my doc I would lose most of the weight before I start it. You see the reason why Im so heavy now is partly because of the Nardil, and partly because I ate way to much while I was on it. Its like my stomach didnt realize it was full so I kept eating. I plan on asking my pdoc to start the nardil once I get down to 190-200, but I want to continue losing weight while taking it. Is this possible? Has anyone had any success with this? A lot of people say Nardil does somthing to your metabolism, but I do not believe this is the case. I believe what it does is make it so you dont know your full so you keep eating. I believe if I stay on a water diet(meaning drink almost nothing but water all day) exercise and eat healthy that I can continue to lose weight while taking nardil. A part of me want to get down to 170 before I start taking it, but I just dont feel I have the time. My life has been on pause since all the bs happened and I need to get back on Nardil asap so I can get my life back. Id like to hear any positive experiences with Nardil regarding success's and weight loss. Also any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Nardil is truely a lifesaver for me and I cant wait till I get back on it. Much love and God bless everyone!

Lifelover I understand you want to lose weight but this isn't the way to do it. Your need all the nutrients in a diet and salt for you homeostasis. Hoping someone else chimes in. Phillipa

do you not intend to eat food again? once you do, you will gain the weight back...not to mention the damage to your metabolism...eventually your body will go into starvation mode and not drop weight..does not sound like a sensible plan to me...

Clubfitter I appreciate your response, but you misinterprated what I said. I still eat food,I just watch what I eat and portion what I eat. Im not giving up food at all. When I say water diet I mean replacing all the soda and juice I would normally drink with water. So Im eating normally its just the only beverage I drink during my day will be water. Understand?

Hi,
I gained a tremendous amount of weight due to atypical depression and Nardil. I agree that Nardil does something that seems to mess with our ability to tell when we are full. I could eat three peanut butter sandwiches in the evening, after dinner, and not even feel full.

I was able to lose much of the weight while continuing on Nardil though strenuous exercise and a low carbohydrate diet. Nardil seems to make me crave the sweet carbohydrates. I'm a carb addict anyway, but Nardil can make this much worse. By eating lots of protein and non-starchy vegetables, skipping all of the bread and sugar, the carbohydrate cravings are greatly reduced. You need to read labels and bypass almost all sugars and flour. Many fruits and fruit juices are packed with sugar also. It is kind of a tough diet at first, but the carbohydrate cravings can be greatly reduced even while on a medication like Nardil. I use supplements to replace some of the vitamins and minerals I miss on a low carb diet. I am almost never sick, maybe one cold a year. I use a multi-vitamin/mineral, 1800mg of EPA, 1200mg of DHA, 2500mg of Vitamin C, and a high dose of D3 when I'm not getting sunshine every day. I take 100mg of B6 daily, since Nardil depletes this vitamin. I also use psyllium husk to supplement the fiber lost on the low carb diet. Even though fiber has carbohydrates, it doesn't count on low carb and makes your digestive track work a lot better.
Be well,
Jedi

J, excellent advice as usual. Would you mind sharing how you dose your Nardil and b6? If you take Nardil in divided doses, it's next to impossible to take b6 12 hours apart from a dose. I've been taking a B+C stress complex every other night between dinner and bedtime. I wish I could take my entire 75mg in the morning, but this makes the nap problem much worse. Did you notice the fatigue getting better over time? Last thing, how much caffeine do you drink and what times of day? Thanks so much - Z

Hey z,
I really haven't paid that much attention on the dosage timing of B6, maybe I should. I just take the 100mg in the morning. I split my Nardil but take most of it after dinner. I believe the supplemental B6 along with the weight loss has helped my peripheral neuropathy. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1188621/?tool=pubmed) At one point I could not even feel the tuning fork when my GP put it on my ankles, now - no problem. I've also been diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. At some point, I will probably get the operation to take the pressure off these nerves. But I believe that the B6 supplementation has helped with this also(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1949298/?tool=pubmed). Ironically, too much B6 will cause peripheral neuropathy, so watch the dosage. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7878600)

My usual dosage of Nardil is now 60mg. I have become tolerant of most side effects at this dosage, including the afternoon tiredness. I recently increased my dosage to 75mg because of additional stress from (hopefully) short term financial difficulties. I do not want this additional life stressor to manifest into another major depression episode. However, with the 15mg increase in dose, I did notice some increased afternoon tiredness, increase in insomnia, and increased delay in ejaculation. Hope these symptoms will be short term. Anyway, I plan to return to 60mg as soon as possible.

I drink about three large cups of drip coffee in the morning. That's about 450mg of caffeine. This is my drug of choice after Nardil. If I stop coffee cold turkey, the next day I have a splitting headache - and I don't get headaches. I have not had the need for additional caffeine later in the day for many years. I do drink some diet cola on rare occasion, but a 12oz Diet Coke only has about 45mg of caffeine. There is a growing body of evidence on the health benefits of coffee.(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20138903) I like it and don't plan to quit.
Be well z,
Jedi

Jedi I've taken 200mg of B6 for years as years ago an ob-gyn said was good for water retention and it worked. Don't have CTS but it allows me to pee. Phillipa
