Can I split nicotine patches?

Posted by zonked on July 21, 2011, at 16:34:52

Hey all:

Until my insurance pays for my 21mg patches, I do have a box of 16mg patches left over. What I want to do, perhaps, is cut the patches in half with scissors before peeling off the adhesive, so I can use 1.5 patches total (30.5 mg) until I can get my 21mg patches.

16mg is not enough to assauge the nicotine WD symptoms. (And no amount of patch gets rid of the psychological portion, that's for me to deal with regardless.)

Unless this is considered dangerous. I would seal the daily half-patch with scotch tape until the next day. Now, I know that's more nicotine than the 21mg patches, but I don't know how else to do this, unless cutting them in 1/4s is feasible.

I will let you know what I decide to do. I have them at home, I'll get one out and have a look with a pair of scissors.

I'm sure it's not recommended but I have split them without any problem.

Zana, are nicotine patches very thin like Emsam? Emsam cutting was confirmed by a drug rep as not interfering with delivery even though it's strictly off label.

Nice to see you online. I missed your posts.

Anyone else know about the nicotine patches?

You can split them. You could split a 16mg into quarters and then use one and a quarter = 20mg. Maybe thats not enough?

Spitting the tan ones isn't as easy as the clears, but I've now done it. I will be wearing 1.5 21mg patches until my insurance covers the 21mg box later this week. I may be cranky for a bit but have quit successfully using patches before (for one year.) Strangely cigarettes are more expensive for me than food! $6-7 a pack in California these days... Wish me luck. Thanks for the advice guys.

Whoa. I meant 1.5 16mg patches. I forgot how nasty the withdrawals are even with the patch. I seem to remember the first week being the most difficult, let's see if I make it this time!

Oh good. I was confused. Nicotine withdrawal is absolutely better left to another future time, IMO. I can't remember if nicotine has a good synergy with maoi's or not. But, again, IMO, getting at least four months of the Nardil under your belt seems conservatively wise.

Signed, this month's reigning queen of massive withdrawal,

My best friend always says, mamas always know best! I don't need nicotine withdrawal right now. You're right. I was so cranky fiendish and gross. Better to make sure my depression has been under good control for a bit first. That also is the nicotine addict talking as well. LOL. As for the expense, I may have a friend in a more tobacco friendly state ship me a carton. My Dad once ordered a carton from eastern europe, I forgot whether or not he considered them equivalent to local store bought smokes. I keep having to remind myself as I slowly emerge from the LIFE COMA that is depression, that I can't fix everything in a day. Thanks bridgey. Glad also you are on a better path. -z
