bupropion anger

Posted by andreachem on July 13, 2011, at 4:30:59

hi everybody! i'm new on Dr. Bob and i'd want to ask this: Wellbutrin XL is very effective for my MDD, but it increased my irritabily, anxiety, and anger. How can I do to minimize these side effects? adding a mood stabilizer or an antipsychotic med? thanks for all the replies. Andreachem.

It did the same thing to me. A friend of mine said Wellbutrin made him want to bite people's heads off. Lots of docs prescribe SSRIs in conjunction with Wellbutrin, although that didn't stop the anger, anxiety and irritability for me. It was very weird because I'm not normally aggressive. Anyway, off the top of my head, SSRIs, benzos, gabapentin, Lyrica come to mind as first choices. I would hold off on the APs unless you try other things and they don't work. Others will weigh in too. Glad you are experiencing relief from this drug.

Wellbutrin always makes me irritable and quick to anger. After a while I start to feel hypo-manic or even manic on it. I just can't take it.

It's odd that docs say that is the antidepressant least likely to cause mania issues. But it does for me.

Good luck.

I would think you'd want to try an SSRI (maybe celexa or lexapro? They're fairly "clean"), BuSpar, a benzodiazepine such as ativan or klonopin, or maybe just try a lower dose of the Wellbutrin before you try an anticonvulsant or a neuroleptic.

Good luck.

Yes an antipsychotic. I don't know if moodstablizer would work but it is likely. Just make sure its a sedating one.

Wellbutrin XL definitely made me angry and combative when I took it alone. Had to go off it. Also made me horribly anxious, but I have an anxiety disorder so that's not unusual for Wellbutrin.

For a while in the past I took both Wellbutrin SR and Celexa but the Wellbutrin did increase anxiety and gave me chest pains so I had to stop it back then too.

Tossing an SSRI into the mix would probably help with the anger and irritability.

I wonder if anybody is prescribing Viibryd with Wellbutrin these days...or still just using the older ssris.

By the way I was also one of those lucky people who got testicular pain with Wellbutrin. Not a fun side effect.

as often as i say shit about pdocs, this is one thing a pdoc might be good about.

i think it depends on just how you have 'irritabily, anxiety, and anger' (and i think for some people with adhd, bupropion can reduce those symptoms). Also, what are your original MDD symptoms, and have you tried other drugs (and how did they effects you, + & -)

lowish lithium is my first instinct, unless you're the rare bird who hasn't tried an ssri

Hi and Welcome,
I've use bupropion alone and in combination with Nardil and other medications. It has some good points for sure, but has always increased my irritability, anxiety and anger. I've used all versions, and the extended release varieties are easier on me.

Bupropion led to the only case of road rage in my life! A guy pulled out of a parking spot, almost hit me, forced me into the other lane, with the tires squealing. I looked back and all three guys in the car were flipping me off. On bupropion, this was just more than I could take, got out and took on all three of them. They got the worst of it, by far. I assure you, nothing like this ever would have happened without the bupropion. I am generally quite passive. Be careful on this med.
Good Luck,
Jedi

understood. But I live in Italy, and Bupropion exists only at dosage of 150 and 300 mg XL. There are not psychostimulants on the market, only SNRI such as Duloxetine and Venlafaxine. By the way, these ones are sedative and doesn't control my severe OCD. Only Duloxetine is a good choice for depression, but it give me terrible costipation.
