Is 15mg of Valium too much??

Posted by jms600 on April 5, 2011, at 5:55:41

I'm currently going through quite a bad patch with anxiety at the moment. I'm currently taking 150mg Effexor, 600mg lithium, 40mg buspirone and 10mg of Zyprexa. Even with the Zyprexa my anxiety is still bad along with severe panic attacks. I'm taking Valium to help with the anxiety - but it only really begins to help when I take 15mg in one go (per dose).

Can anyone tell me if 15mg is unsafe or dangerous? I've read that the maximum recommended dose is only 10mg per dose, but that just doesn't clear my anxiety. Can I still take 15mg or is that just not recommended?

Thanks

It is very, very hard to die from a Valium overdose. Unless you took hundreds, you would just fall asleep and sleep it off. Just don't start drinking heavily or mixing it with other sedatives (antipsychotics are fine).

You'll be fine. Think of it this way--Valium is only 1/20 as potent as klonopin. So, 15/20=.075mgs. You basically took slightly less than 1mgs Klonopin, although there's way more sedation. For some reason, doctors tend to under-dose Valium compared to other tranquilizers; I guess the "Mother's Little Helper" reputation is part of the problem.

Anyway, back when Valium reigned supreme in terms of sales, the standard dose was 30-40+mgs/day (3 doses of 10 daytime; optional 10mgs night time dose).

No 15mg isn't high at all. What above posters is true and from personal experience have treated patients taking over l00mg a day some seizure patients take more and for DT's also. But shouldn't drink. Phillipa good luck!!!!

Valium is aproved in doses upto 40mg per day, so provided you dont take 15mg more than 3 times a day you should be ok

Having said that, other benzos like Xanax or Klonopin can be more effective for panic attacks than Valium is

Phillipa,

Does Valium have anti-seizure properties? I've heard klonopin used that way?

And Valium would cause more sedation than xanax? At equivalent doses?

I have not tried Valium. Klonopon (thumbs down, but very heavy duty for acute anxiety ime), and librium (blech! in my experience).

Xanax, my doc says is a muscle relaxant. Not so Valium?

Valium not as good for panic?

Is there an ER version? (Or xr or cr version of Valium?)

Hope this patch passes and are finding some relief.

When at my worst anxiety, I hunkered down with klonopin. When anxiety remitted somewhat, I went back to xanax.

Keep us posted. ((Best to you))

Valium has the longest half life of the benzos and anti seizure properties as used a lot in detox or was. It also has muscle relaxant properties and to me it's mild. Love Phillipa

Any value in trying it for xanax xr?

I currently take .5mg 3x daily of controlled release. Xanax. 1.5mg total).

About to write. Three times a day of controlled release? Only took it twice a day. Personally you don't seem to mention panic disorder which xanax seems to be best for. Valium is in my opinion a good replacement. I've always preferred it. Easiest to discontinue with the long half life too. Not that this is an issue now. Love Phillipa

Very quiet panic, like dysphoric. Remember SP once.

Thanks.

Maybe more stability?
