MAOI with prebiotic and or probiotic?

Posted by gardenroses on March 19, 2011, at 18:07:58

I've been on Emsam for about 5 months now, just upping my dosage recently to the 9 mg/24 hr patch. The food interactions I can handle but I have been re-evaluating my supplements. A doc told me to be careful with supplements/herbals and MAOIs. I believe I read that probiotic pills such as Lactobacillus are not recommended with MAOIs? Also I was taking a prebiotic mixture that was basically FOS and inulin. I am not mentioning brand names. This prebiotic mix was supposed to wash the probiotic through my system and into the colon where it did its work. It did keep me "regular" but caused a lot of bloating. I also have a poor immune system and worry about adding bacteria to my stomach. It's not ALL good bacteria when you take that stuff. I THINK I read that FOS is not good with MAOIs. (I was up researching all this on the internet till 2 am last night.) I would love to just eat one good yogurt a day instead of taking these supplements. Is yogurt okay with Emsam? Something like Activa? For fiber I could just eat some good bran cereal daily.

I have never had a problem with any Yogurt on Nardil. I take psyllium husk for added fiber. some don't like the texture, but I IBS-D and it controls it so well. I don't even know it is there.

Yes, i think yoghurt is good with maoi.

I think the biggest risk with an MAOi is sudden increase in tyramine: and the general colon/probiotic etc etc is really only going to change on multi day timeframe. there is multi layer biofilms there and a single comercial yoghurt isn't anything drastic for it.

i think eating lots of FOS (onion et al) and other veg and fermentable fibre is one of the best things you can do for mental health.
