Propranolol HCL for anxiety - side-effects

Posted by Diego11 on March 14, 2011, at 6:25:36

Hi, I have been using inderal for some times now, doses of 10-20mg before any stressful situation is usually enough and it works well for physical symptoms of my anxiety, but i have some side effects, especially as a visual disturbance(something like a feeling of depersonalization), dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue... it makes me sleepy and tired. My question, Is there any way/tips on how to manage any of these unpleasant side effects(maybe adding some supplements or something else...i don't know) ?

I also tried a very low dose of 5 mg before any situation but it's not work as well as dose of 10 - 20mg. I still had some side effects but it was better than on 10mg. However, for me the worst side effect - visual disturbance - still persisted even at 5 mg.

I have also tried another a/b blocker - carvedilol, but unfortunately it's not work as well as propranolol and the majority of the above-described problems persist.

Do you have any advice, ideas? Thanks.

I am not sure about your side effects, but I find that propranolol is better tolerated with food.

maybe when i take only 5mg dose then i have less of all those side effects but dose of 5 mg it's not work as well as dose of 10 - 20mg for me. And i still have some side effects but overall it is still better than on 10 or 20mg.
As I wrote, for me the worst side effect is visual disturbance. I described it as a feeling of depersonalization, it's very uncomfortable and distracting especially while i am driving.
Obviously, while i am taking propranolol with xanax or oxazepam(still in low doses) then it is more likely that some side effect occur and it makes me even more tired and sleepy...but on the other hand it is only thing that really and certainly works for my SAD and anticipation anxiety!

I will try to take a propranolol daily in 10mg dose and mainly with some food and maybe some side effects decreases over time. I don't know but maybe i have not so much adrenaline in a stressful situations when i have so many of those side effects...
