Wellbutrin + sex drive

Posted by Amdew717 on December 15, 2010, at 8:19:29

Hello everyone,
I'm giving Wellbutrin another try mainly because i remember that it increased my sex drive when i tried it before. However, this time around i'm taking the generic Bupropion XL (manufactured by Mylan), instead of the brand.

here's my question: Has anyone else seen their sex drive improve on Wellbutrin and if so, have you experienced this same effect when taking the generic version? Also about how long before you began to feel some boost in your sex drive after taking it?

Of course, I also hope it works on my depression without making me too agitated or keeping me awake all night, LOL.

Thanks, James

Very stimulating when I took it. Hoping it helps your depression. Phillipa

**I switched to Buproprion after 2 months of taking Wellbutrin, and didn't experience any decline in my "increased drive". In fact, mine went through the roof, and stayed that way until it became problematic for me. (Binge shopping and other uncharacteristically risky behaviors on my part.)

**I didn't see any increase or decrease in agitation, but I was up a lot with "manic-like energy". But aside from this and binge shopping/risky behaviors, I was more active and less depressed on this med. I'd probably still be on it if it weren't for all the odd side effects I experienced.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Free,
How much time passed from when you began taking WB until you noticed an improvment in your sex drive and what dosage were you taking?

James

**I don't remember the exact number of days, but I noticed the increase within a week.

**I'm not positive, but I think I started on Wellbutrin XL 150mg, and then switched over to Bupropion SR 150mg.

Good luck, James.

Ok, here is an update....

I had my Dr give me a new Rx for "branded" Wellbutrin XL. I began taking 150 mg for 4 days, then increased to 300 mg for the last 3 days.
It is now Day 7 and here's what I've experienced:

1) Very LOW energy, even lower than before i began taking it. I take it 1st thing in the AM and it's a struggle to stay awake all through the morning.

2) So much ANXIETY, way more than before i began

3) Feeling more DEPRESSED than before I began. Little or no interest in the things I love, like music.

3) MUCH-REDUCED LIBIDO, again way lower than before (this is the whole reason i wanted to take it, to increase libido). I feel i've always been undersexed.

This is not what i hoped for. I spoke to my Dr today and he said these were all the opposite of what I should be feeling. Yet he didn't give me an indication that things would turn around. He suggested dropping back to 150, so maybe that could work. He also suggested that I take it in the evening.

I would like to give it a fair shot since it was my idea to try this rather ill-timed experiment.

A little background....I took immediate release WB back in the mid-90s and don't recall any of these s/e's. Back then i experienced irritablity, insomnia, sweating and increased sex drive.

Any feedback, encouragement would be much appreciated.

Thanks, James

Well encouragment -- good luck, hope things get better. I also had a paradoxical reaction to wellbutrin at first. As I got used to it, things got better, but I never felt okay on it. I was glad to stop.

When I took wellbutrin, I noticed an increase in my sex drive within a few days of starting it. At that time, I believe I was on 300mg, though I eventually went up to 450mg. It was a great drug for me, though it eventually pooped out on me.

Now that I've been off of it for 2.5 months, I'm hoping that when I resume it, it will have the same effects it once did. I have to say, though, that even when the AD effects began to wane, the stronger sex drive was still present.

Sounds like you're really having a paradoxical reaction to this med.I'd give it a little longer and maybe even try increasing the dose if the 150mg doesn't do it for you. If neither of those works, than it must just not be a good drug for you:-(.
