Phosphatase may be target for novel antidepressant approach

Behavioral Health Central reports:

Current antidepressants work by trying to fix out-of-whack neurotransmitter systems most often, the serotonin system.

But a new study suggests that a different approach is also possible. By inhibiting a phosphatase that they had identified as being overexpressed in the brains of depressed patients, a team of scientists was able to reverse the symptoms of depression in animals.

I've seen in three other sources this week newly discovered causes of depression. From a newspaper, a TV news story, and a neuroscience magazine.

In all cases, the culprit was inflammation from unexplained causes. Substances that were reversing the depressive behavior in rats were substances that suppress specific immune markers of inflammation. All were plant based.

From my own experience I can attest this is solidly true, and that science is about 10 years behind the times.

They also found that many of the current antidepressants have side mechanisms that can also suppress the inflammation. And that when they are effective, the efficacy may not have anything to do with the neurotransmitters. The impact on the neurotransmitters causes the side effects, but the efficacy came from the immune system modulation.

But they didn't take it quite far enough....why is there inflammation? I know of several common causes of hidden unseen inflammation, but I'm surprised they didn't even consider taking the discoveries one step further.

Anyway. Depression is improved or cured every day by substances that are not psychiatric medications.

What's really absurd is that they will take the next 20 years figuring out how to duplicate the actions of these specific plants, instead of just using the plants as they are that already work.

Oh well.
