Scared, low pulse pressure

Posted by Deneb on September 25, 2010, at 22:21:39

OK, I know this may not belong in Meds, but I am scared. I just measured my blood pressure and the difference between the systolic and diastolic is low. 93/67 with 76 pulse.

I just read that a pulse pressure of 25 and below is considered extremely low.

Should I be concerned? I think this change came about after I started restricting my calories severely and losing weight rapidly.

Just to make this meds related, can taking propranolol make this better?

No your pressure isn't dangerously low but Deneb remember or google Karen Carpenter she had an eating disorder and she messed up her potassium/sodium to heart and is no longer with us. So eat and let your doc know what you're doing. Phillipa

Your low blood pressure/pulse is what mine is all the time. As long as you are not suffering any ill consequences from it...for example fainting...it is probably of no concern. Look at it this way. While most people have health/death risks due to high blood pressure, you are one of the lucky ones who doesn't have that problem. That's what my docs say anyway.

Are any of your meds known for lowering blood pressure and rate? If not, then there is something else going on....thyroid, adrenal, infection...probably a complicated mix of them all. And thus having a psychiatric disorder would be expected from any of those issues.

Hi Deneb. Your BP isn't that low. But I do remember you writing about how you were blacking out (you weren't fainting but was coming very close). I think that the Risperdal is responsible for that. Are you still taking that med? Your pulse isn't low for a resting pulse.

Keep an eye on things and if it gets worse, well then it's time to worry.

Oh, I know my blood pressure isn't that low. I was worried about the *pulse pressure*, the difference between the systolic and diastolic.

Propranolol will not help your blood pressure - it will do exactly the opposite. So, if you feel that your pressure is low, you should stop taking it. You may want to consider altenlol, also a beta blocker. It still may affect your BP, but not as much. You should ask the doctor that prescribed the propranolol about side effects; he should have told you it could be a problem.

Deneb pulse pressure would be of concern if you had a know heart condition and you don't. Phillipa

Oh I haven't taken any propranolol in days. I only use it when I'm anxious. My blood pressure isn't too low. It's been as low as 73/47 before and I was usually OK. Strangely that was before I lost weight. With the weight loss my blood pressure has actually gone up.

Thanks for that info Phillipa! I'm not worried now that I know that.
