Once Paxil stop working, nothing else works.

Posted by odon on September 10, 2010, at 12:01:27

Has anyone had an ssri,in my case paxil work great for about 8 years, then it slowly stopped working. Now nothing else works.I originally took Paxil for anxiety and a few phobias,NOT depression. After trying many other medications,it seems none of them work.---Before both taking Paxil, and once it stopped working,I never knew what clinical depression felt like. Now I do.And the only things that seem to help my mood and anxiety syptoms a little are xanax, and oddly enough diet coke(not coffee).Any suggestions?Right now the only medication I take is xanax 1 mg 3 times a day.

I should add,I've also had some strange syptoms like I always used to perspire or sweat normally. Now I hardly do.I can't tolerate much stress.I sometimes get physically agitated for no reason. My skin does not tan like it used to.I'm wondering if Paxil changed something.

Hi Odon only ad that worked for me after three miserable months of adjusting. Have been on benzos for 40 years I'm older. I took low dose of xanax with l0mg of paxil for two years it worked great then went off it. It did work second time then the pdoc took me off it and nothing has been the same since. A trial of luvox after worked for a while then kind of pooped out but inbetween now and then have been on most of the ssri's and snri's and none worked. So I relate. A recent poster did great on l0mg of paxil for 13 years and then same as you. She added a med to the paxil and it now works again. Phillipa

What other meds have you tried and how long did you stick with them?

Sine the Paxil stopped working,I've tried most of the other ssris, anafranil but I did not stay on anafranil that long.I even tried Parnate, which was a little helpful but not enough. The odd thing is I was never treatment resistant until after the ssri specifically Paxil stopped working.Right now it seems I've even become somewhat sensitive to psychiatric medications, and am taking no antidepressant. It seems antidepressants make me worse now, when they used to work so well.I'm not anti medication but I'm almost sorry I ever started taking Paxil, considering my symptoms were not that bad before taking it.

Msybe a mood stabiliser would help you depression. Something like Lithium, Tegretol or Depakote. It's worth a try since you are not reacting to anti-depressants.

I can imagine how crappy you must feel. Eight years is a long time for a med to work.

It would probably work again, maybe even better than ever, if Nortriptyline was added to it. Or Zoloft+Nortriptyline.

Is nortriptyline really what its cracked up to be? How come desipramine isn't mentioned as often here. Is it because of Gilman or just because its better?

I'm seriously considering ordering it. I'm not too happy with my pdoc, prescribing all these new drugs and I don't have good insurance to cover it.

Also she denies that a patient of hers that I know got TD from risperdal which really made me lose trust in her. Even risperdal.com says that it can cause TD.

I generally get a feeling around psychiatrists that is like they feel superior to the patient. In reality they're exalted prescription pads with legs, who get fat on luncheons with pharmaceutical reps.

I'm like at the point where I'll risk ordering something online w/ no script.

I ordered Nortriptyline online without a prescription (even though I was doing it legally as Nortrip. was part of my cocktail). I ordered them to OD on. When I got them they didn't look at like the Nortrip. I get here from my pharmacy. Made me wonder if it really is Nortrip. It would be best if you could get your pdoc to prescribe it (yeah right, no sh*t Sherlock). I'm just saying be careful where you order it from.

In the case of some psychiatrists, I agree. I hate when they start to deny that the drugs they have prescribed may have caused a particular side effect. Deny, deny deny...

It's possible that a paxil variant, Pexeva might work for you.

I think after time psyche drugs can weaken certain functions in your body. I think they can also weaken things to the extent that you don't respond as well to medications and develop severe fatigue and/or anxiety and/or depression. The lack of sweating is a major sign, yet something that is probably only treated symptomatically.

Curious, I googled and found this:

http://www.shen-nong.com/eng/exam/internal_no_sweating.html

Lots of herb and dietary advice to address the underlying conditions that may lead to a symptom like lack of sweating. The explanations may be weird, but at least there are some concrete herbals and dietary suggestions based on having observed people with these symptoms and what helped them. What's to lose by trying?

I would try amitriptyline or imipramine and give each of them a good 6 to 8 week chance. These are extremely powerful drugs, and work more often than not if dosed properly.

Thanks everyone for the advice and suggestions so far.I wonder why diet coke raises my mood a little but not coffee.Diet coke contains phenylalanine.---I used to get a nice feeling from coffee and/or an alcoholic drink or 2,now I do not.--I'm guessing long term ssri use has changed how I respond to many things.Again I never knew what clinical depression felt like prior to ssri use,and while they were working.
