Xanax vs Ativan

Posted by vic80 on July 18, 2010, at 17:40:54

I have been on Ativan 0.5 mg since 3 months. I feel i could probably try Xanax.
How different are the 2 in their over all purpose efficacy and use? I found Xanax 0.5 mg which i took only once last night to be b bit sedating. Does the sedative effect neutralize after a few days? Have not found Ativan to ever make me feel sedated and would provide me good mental clarity.
The reason i would like to make a switch is to tap the much talked mood elevating effects of Xanax and its quick onset.
Another general query abt Benzos i have is whether they invariably cause mood blunting effect and apathy. And their overall impact on creativity and productive output.

Much thanks
Vic

My pdoc wants me to switch from Ativan to Xanax. I take 2mg Ativan daily (1mg night & 1/2mg morning and late afternoon. I'm also taking Wellbutrin & Celexa. The Ativan (lorazepam)makes me tired and he said the Xanax won't. I just don't know about taking Xanax regularly....kind of scary.

No one says you must but you could try it and see what you feel. I myself used to take it during day too don't need to anymore. And any cutting back to valium only. Phillipa

So did you find the Xanax made you tired during the day? What dosage did you take? How did you find the combination of Valium with Xanax, were you one the 2 of them together for long?
Thanks

Used to take.25 of xanax during day and .5 at night. No wasn't tired as anxiety tires you and it was relieved. I used to take 5mg of valium three times a day 40 years ago with miltown 450mg. Wasn't tired felt great. Through the years doses have varied down to none. Now down to as of last night, 5mg of valium, and .5 xanax. Nothing during day as valium long acting. Phillipa
