DESPERATE for any ideas to mix with Parnate

Posted by inanimate peanut on June 25, 2010, at 1:16:24

Hi all,

That's it. I think I've tried everything that's likely to work and am on so many drugs that i'm one giant side effect (I think I will go off the zyprexa, but the others all play a role and need to stay). I know this post is long but please take time to read and advise. I'm not changing from parnate so that limits things. My diagnosis is Bipolar I, Mixed Type although I've only had one mixed phase in the past 2 years as this is easily controlled by the Geodon. My major problem is bipolar depression. I'm listing below all the meds I've tried (except anti-depressants, as that obviously doesn't matter since I'm on parnate and not switching). Please read through and let me know anything else I might try. I am really desperate for help and would really appreciate it!!

Meds/supplements I'm on:
Geodon
Lamictal
Topamax
Zyprexa
Mirapex
Parnate
Levothyroxine
Phenerzine (sleep)
Ambien
Yasmin (BC)
Fish Oil
N-Acetyl Cysteine
Co-Q 10
Multivitamin
Protein Shake

I've tried (either never worked or stopped working):
ANTIPSYCHOTICS
abilify
risperdal
Seroquel

ANTICONVULSANTS
Depakote

SIMULANTS
Provigil
Ritalin
Caffiene

P.S. I thought about trying Neurontin but the doc in Stanford said only depakote and i think tegretol were the only 2 shown to work in bipolar depression (and I think tegretol may conflict with my meds). I also thought about Nortriptyline but my doc won't go for it and about T3 supplementation but neither my pdoc nor my endo will go for that.

Oh wow Peanut what a mess. I of course have no idea but wanted you to know I care. And Stanford didn't solve problem. How's your doc there? Phillipa

It is too bad that nortriptyline is being excluded from consideration. Perhaps Wellbutrin would be an easier sell with the Parnate. My doctor mentioned that he has had some success combining Wellbutrin and Lamictal.

What about lithium? Perhaps all that would be necessary are low dosages between 300-600mg.

How did Seroquel affect you?

Sorry, I should have added Lithium and Wellbutrin as drugs I've tried. I'm thinking about ordering the nortriptyline from overseas and doing it myself. Not too sure though.

Thanks for caring Phillipa. My pdoc is so sick of me. She had to fill out my disability application for me this month and was not overly excited about it.

Hi Peanut (can I call you that? :-)

I'm posting this only because you're desperate and I know how that feels. I took parnate for over a year, I got partial response along the way but a FULL response when my pdoc added dexedrine. I felt great for a little while. I STRESS though that for some people this is a risky combo. At 80mg parnate and 40mg dexedrine it knocked me on my as*. I think I'm in a minority though and with Geodon on board maybe this would be an option for you, don't know. I see you tried ritalin with it but that was different *for me*.

Anyway, I see in your post below you may go the tca route, good luck if you do and I'll be looking for your results. Good luck!
