Have i got Tourettes??

Posted by jms600 on June 7, 2010, at 10:58:30

Can anyone tell me if i'm suffering from Tourette Syndrome?? I have this dreadful urge to shout out obscenities while in the company of others. It's a horrible feeling which is really worrying me. I don't generally get it while alone - just when i'm with others.

I also used to get feelings or 'urges' of hitting or pushing people while with them, but those particular feelings don't seem to occur so much lately.

I currently suffer from moderate uni-polar depression, severe panic disorder, GAD and social phobia.

Is there anything i can do about these terrible urges? I've tried CBT but it didn't seem to help much. I'm currently on 60mg duloxetine, 40mg buspirone, 600mg lithium and 600mg pregabalin per day.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Does your doctor know of these urges? Phillipa

Yes - but he seems to just pass it off and doesn't really listen to my concerns.

Do you do this behavior when with him or just different situations. I would also be concerned. Phillipa

As long as you are not vocalizing what you are thinking, I think this symptom would fall under obsessive or intrusive thinking. I've experienced the same with severe anxiety. It went away when I got my GAD under control, first with Zoloft, now with Cymbalta.

No, I'm not vocalizing what I'm thinking - but I want to. I feel an urge to. It really really terrifies me. I hope it is part of my GAD which is quite severe. What ever drug I try nothing seems to help the GAD. Even benzos struggle unless I take a high dose - and I can't do that daily.

Thanks.

Other folks here know a lot more than I about psych drugs, so this may be way off-base, but what about an AD that boosts norepinephrin? When I went from an SSRI to an SNRI my anxiety, which was my main problem, faded away over the course of a month.

And GAD w/ various sorts of compulsions / obsessions is pretty common according to my NP. Then years ago during my worst period of anxiety I felt compelled to throw myself off a high building even though I was not suicidal -- it was just that once the though occurred to me, I felt a compulsion to carry it out. Which sounds similar to what you describe.

Which SNRI worked for you did you also take benzos? I've tried them this dumb luvox low 50mg has a hold on me. Why? Phillipa

Hi Phillipa, Cymbalta has been working for me though I'm only in my third month. No benzos -- in fact, the opposite: because I have ADHD I take up to 30 mg of Ritalin a day, which can sometimes push me toward anxiety, but the Cymbalta seems to create a brake. I also meditate for half an hour everyday, even when I don't feel like it.

I get the same thing! Well not obscenities, but when I am in line for security checks at the airport I feel an urge to shout out that I have a bomb. Well maybe not an urge, but a fear of the urge.

Also when I am shaving my legs I get the fear that I will run my fingers on the blades and cut them.

I didn't know this could be a symptom of GAD.

I don't know if it's specifically a symptom of GAD, but it can certainly occur with it. My psych NP says I have GAD w/ OCD overtones -- I don't actually have to act out my obsessive-compulsive thoughts thoughts, but they whirl around in my mind nevertheless.

I think they can often co-exist and probably develop together in many individuals. I also think that anxiety & depression are very often aspects of the same illness, though experientially they feel quite different.

I had tourettes when I was in my teens. It was pretty bad, all the symptoms I had.

I took Risperdal for 1 year and it vanished and I got off the medicine and it never came back.

~~~ I also believe this. I did not in the past, thinking my anxiety disorder was stand alone and underappreciated as ONE SINGLE disorder. Using the "gold standard" in anxiety treatment resulting in the quelling the symptoms... YET not getting much better in terms of mood, thought processes and functioning, convinced me differently.
"Very often, we find that people have more than one condition -- both depression and anxiety disorder," says Charles Goodstein, MD a professor of psychiatry at New York University School of Medicine, with a clinical practice in Tenafly, N.J. "As a matter of fact, it's very hard to find patients who are depressed who don't also have anxiety. It's equally hard to find people with anxiety who don't have some depression."
Chujoe thanks for the link in the 70's panic was treated at least in my case with valium and miltown which I just quit within probably a few months as felt good. Don't have panic anymore so cutting down still further with both benzos and luvox. Phillipa
