MAOIs and thyroid hormones

Posted by Ezrahite on March 31, 2010, at 22:17:53

I have reason to believe my thyroid levels are too low for me and I could possibly benefit from a more symptom-based approach to treatment. When I was on Parnate, I noticed some side effects at first, and when increasing doses, that were a lot like those I get when I increase T4. I have read that monoamine oxidase breaks down thyroid hormone as well as various neurotransmitters. Now I wonder if those side effects were due to that, and if perhaps some of the more positive side effects I had at the start - more energy, less fatigue, weight loss - are also related to thyroid levels. I had attributed those to the stimulant effects of Parnate, but I don't get the same effects from actual stimulants.

So I'm very interested in how MAOIs affect thyroid function. Which thyroid hormones are broken down by MAO? Where does it happen, would MAOIs increase thyroid hormone levels where they can actually affect the body? Is the increase, if any, large enough to have a real effect?

I read that MAO breaks down thyroid hormones in a couple places, but couldn't find any specific information anywhere. I guess it shouldn't surprise me if it turns out not to be true. Oh well.
