Parnate Roller Coaster

Posted by lewyfly on March 18, 2010, at 18:08:01

Hi There,

New to this type of info sharing but not unfortunately new to depression and it"s associated meds.

After 15yrs of various meds (i am from New Zealand, we don't have access to alot of the meds mentioned on this site) i have been put on Parnate.

Psych Doc prescribed 40mg in the am once daily. I have slowly moved up to the 40mg (3 weeks). I could not take 40 at once because of pounding heart, tight chest, shortness of breath, adrenaline surge, dizziness and feeling of weakness.

I have tried splitting the dose 20 am and 20 lunch time. But after taking lunch time dose I get the same effects which seems to make my mood crash and end up angry/teary and generally confused.

Sleep is the other problem, can't get to or stay asleep with out using Lorazepam. Not sure if sleep problem is because of parnate or just general depression.

Does anyone have any experience with these types of problems on a relatively low dose of parnate?

Also has anybody had good therapeutic effect from parnate at 20 or 30 mgs.

I have been on parnate 5 weeks now, rollercoaster experience beginning to wear a little thin!!

Thanks alot.

I've been stable on 30mg for close to a year now. Split it up and take 10mg three times a day. Never had the side effects you describe, but I did have wicked insomnia at the beginning. I now take Seroquel, 100mg, at bedtime and that seems to work.

Hello Lewyfly!

Welcome to Psycho-Babble. I've never taken Parnate, but I think there are some people on Babble who have. I hope you get some feedback.

Thanks for your comment. I have tried seroquel in the past and it basically puts me out for the night and following day even only 25mgs.

I will consider splitting dose 3 times.

Thanks.

When I was on MAOI's I had to take seroquel to sleep, along with my other sleep meds. It may not have the sedating carryover with parnate. It might be worth a shot. MAOI induced insomnia is no fun.

cyproheptadine has a halflife only several hours long. gabapentin has 5h. those might be better to try.

and i found 40mg the minimum i needed of tranylcypromine
