memantine + SSRI akathisia :

Posted by g_g_g_unit on February 17, 2010, at 3:31:57

is there any reason to believe memantine could help ssri akathisia? my pdoc was basically waiting for my go ahead to add it to the prozac .. honestly, i wouldn't be posting this much, but the akathisia is hell .. i'm just a mess.. suicidal and can barely sit still .. it's almost two weeks at 20mg (5 more days) so i can hang on if it might pass..

When I was in the hospital they shot me up w/ Geodon which caused HORRIBLE akathesia. Didn't think I could survive.

Finally a nice nurse had them give me a shot of Cogentin and that took it right away.

I've heard of Cogentin used for akathesia before but that was my first experience and it definitely did the trick. Perhaps that's an option for you.

Isn't cogentin just for antipsychtics? Why akathesia with SSRI's. Is it then like a paradoxical reaction? Phillipa

I got akathesia from perphenizine and was told to take benadryl. That did the trick.

i apologise for not being clear - i wasn't necessarily interested in finding alternative solutions to treating the akathisia, but was curious whether memantine itself might help as a bonus, since my pdoc was planning to add it to Prozac for OCD anyway....

it does not pass, in my case has been permanent and multiple movement problems and extreme problems with motivation and cognition have followed. whether SSRIs caused it or accelerated an already existent disease course, i don't know, but i should have never stayed on them.

i do not respond to cogentin, i respond to lorazepam.

if this drug has permanent effects on you, i would expect that your doctor will only shrug.

i hear ya. i have not stayed on SSRI's, only trialled them briefly, but those trials have induced restless leg syndrome, myoclonic jerking, and akathisia, all of which have never fully abated. in fact, i'd become so used to living in an akathisia-like state that i didn't really know what was going on until low-dose amitriptyline partially resolved the problem. i've even begun to chew my mouth on prozac, which i doubt is a good sign. anyway, the psychiatrist suggested i discontinue the drug, but i'm at a loss about where to go to next

Seriously? Makes me wonder if what I have isn't anxiety since it's changed and akathesia. Inner restlessness for sure. Phillipa
